Symptom Table

Condition Possible Sources Action
  • Tires show excess wear on edge of tread
  • Underinflated tires
  • ADJUST the tire air pressure.
  • Vehicle overloaded
  • RETURN the vehicle - NOTIFY customer of overload condition.
  • High-speed cornering
  • RETURN the vehicle - NOTIFY customer of cause of condition.
  • Incorrect wheel alignment
  • Incorrect tire rotation intervals
  • ADVISE customer of condition. ROTATE the tires.
  • Tires show excess wear in center of tread
  • Tires overinflated
  • ADJUST the tire air pressure.
  • Other excessive tire wear problems
  • Incorrect tire pressure
  • ADJUST the tire air pressure.
  • Loose or leaking shock absorbers
  • TIGHTEN or INSTALL new shock absorbers as necessary.
  • Front end out of alignment
  • Front wheel bearings out of adjustment
  • Loose, worn or damaged suspension components
 
  • Wheel and tire assembly out of balance
  • BALANCE the wheel and tire assembly.
  • Excessive lateral or radial runout of wheel or tire
  • Incorrect tire rotation intervals
  • ADVISE customer of condition. ROTATE tires.
  • Wobble or shimmy
  • Damaged wheel bearings
  • Loose or damaged suspension components
 
  • Bent wheel
  • INSTALL a new wheel as necessary.
  • Wheel and tire assembly out of balance
  • BALANCE the wheel and tire assembly.
  • Damaged tire
  • INSTALL a new tire as necessary.
  • Loose wheel nuts
  • TIGHTEN the wheel nuts to specification.
  • High-speed shake
  • Wheel hub face/pilot/bolt circle runout
  • Wheel and tire assembly out of balance
  • Wheel bearings
  • Suspension/steering linkage
  • Engine
  • Transmission
  • Brake discs/imbalance
  • Vehicle vibration
  • Driveline - engine
  • Wheel and tire assembly out of balance
  • Damaged wheel nuts
  • Loose wheel assembly
  • Overtightened wheel nuts
  • INSTALL new wheel nuts. FOLLOW the correct tightening procedure.
  • Seized wheel nuts
  • Corrosion or galling
    CAUTION: Do not allow the lubricant to get on the cone seats of the stud holes or on the cone angles of the wheel nuts.
  • If the corrosion is slight, BRUSH away the corrosion with a wire brush. If the corrosion is excessive, INSTALL new wheel studs and wheel nuts. If the condition persists, LUBRICATE the first 3 threads of each wheel stud with a graphite-based lubricant.
  • Overloading
  • REDUCE the load weight.
