Inspection and Verification

  1. Verify the customer concern by checking the air bag indicator in the instrument cluster. For additional information, refer to PROVE OUT THE SYSTEM .
  2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage using the following chart.
    VISUAL INSPECTION CHART

    Mechanical Electrical
    • Damaged restraints control module (RCM) or loose mounting
    • Damaged front impact severity sensor or loose mounting
    • Damaged side impact sensor or loose mounting
    • Open central junction box (CJB) fuse 26 (10A)
    • Damaged wiring harness
    • Loose, damaged or corroded connectors
    • Circuitry open/shorted
    • Damaged shorting bars
  3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  4. If the cause is not visually evident, connect the diagnostic tool to the data link connector and select the vehicle to be tested from the diagnostic tool menu.

    If the diagnostic tool does not communicate with the vehicle:

    • Check that the program card is correctly installed.
    • Check that the latest diagnostic tool software release is being used.
    • Check the connections to the vehicle.
    • Check the ignition switch position.
  5. If the diagnostic tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the diagnostic tool operating manual.
  6. Carry out the diagnostic tool data link test. If the diagnostic tool responds with:
    • ISO circuit fault; all electronic control units no response/not equipped, refer to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK .
    • No response/not equipped for restraints control module (RCM), Go to SYMPTOM CHART .
    • System passed, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and carry out the on demand self test diagnostics for the RCM.
  7. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM) DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) TABLE .
  8. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, Go to SYMPTOM CHART .

- - 1 RCM Disconnected, Inoperative or Lost/Low Ignition Feed GO to PINPOINT TEST A .
B1231 19 3 RCM Crash Data Memory Full INSTALL a new RCM. REFER to INSPECTION AND REPAIR AFTER A SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) DEPLOYMENT .
B1318 - - Battery Voltage Low CHECK battery voltage; to be above 9.0 volts. REFER to CHARGING SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION .
B1342 24 2 RCM is Faulted INSTALL a new RCM. REFER to RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM) .
B1869 Tone(3) - Lamp Air Bag Warning Indicator Circuit Open GO to PINPOINT TEST B .
B1870 Tone(3) - Lamp Air Bag Warning Indicator Circuit Short to Battery GO to PINPOINT TEST C .
B1871 25 14 Passenger Air Bag Deactivate Module Fault CHECK the RCM for correct configuration. CONFIGURE the RCM correctly as required. If okay, GO to PINPOINT TEST D .
B1884 27 15 Passenger Air Bag Deactivation (PAD) Warning Lamp Circuit Failure GO to PINPOINT TEST E .
B1887 15 6 Air Bag Driver Circuit Shorted to Ground GO to PINPOINT TEST F .
B1888 16 7 Air Bag Passenger Circuit Shorted to Ground GO to PINPOINT TEST G .
B1890 27 15 Passenger Air Bag Deactivation (PAD) Warning Lamp Short To Battery GO to PINPOINT TEST H .
B1891 - - Air Bag Tone Warning Indicator Circuit Short to Battery GO to PINPOINT TEST I .
B1892 - - Air Bag Tone Warning Indicator Circuit Failure GO to PINPOINT TEST J .
B1916 15 6 Air Bag Driver Circuit Short to Battery GO to PINPOINT TEST K .
B1921 21 4 Air Bag Diagnostic Monitor Ground Circuit Open GO to PINPOINT TEST L .
B1925 16 7 Air Bag Passenger Circuit Short to Battery GO to PINPOINT TEST M .

B1935 35 11 Air Bag Passenger Inflator Circuit Resistance Low on Squib CHECK the RCM for correct configuration. CONFIGURE the RCM correctly as required. If OK, GO to PINPOINT TEST Q .
B2477 - - Module Configuration Failure CONFIGURE the RCM. CLEAR the DTC. If the DTC does not clear, CONFIGURE the RCM once again. CLEAR the DTC. If the DTC does not clear, INSTALL a new RCM and CONFIGURE. REFER to RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM) .
C1414 29 5 Incorrect Module Design Level GO to PINPOINT TEST R .
- - - No Communication with the RCM GO to PINPOINT TEST S .
(1) DTC: Diagnostic trouble code, retrieved using diagnostic tool.
(2) LFC: Lamp fault code, flashed on air bag indicator.
(3) Tone will sound only if additional DTCs are present.
