Removal and Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Ford Pickup, 2006 Ford F550 Super Duty, 2006 Ford F450 Super Duty, and 2006 Ford Cab & Chassis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: New Teflon® seals must be installed any time the power steering line fittings are disconnected.

    Vehicles equipped with 6.8L gas or 6.0L diesel engines 

  1. Remove the engine air cleaner. For additional information, refer to INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING .
  2. Vehicles equipped with 5.4L engines 

  3. Remove the air cleaner intake pipe. For additional information, refer to INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING .
  4. Vehicles equipped with 6.0L diesel engine 

    NOTE: If there is any oil residue, clean both connecting ports and the inside surface of the charge air cooler duct to prevent the duct from blowing off.
  5. Loosen the clamps and remove the duct.
    • To install, tighten to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft).

    • All vehicles 

  6. Disconnect the steering gear coupling shield from the line fittings and slide the shield upward on the intermediate shaft.

  7. Remove the intermediate shaft-to-steering gear bolt.
    • To install, tighten to 48 Nm (36 lb-ft).

    NOTE: New Teflon® seals must be installed any time the power steering line fittings are disconnected.
  8. Disconnect the power steering lines.
    1. Discard the Teflon® seals.
      • To install, tighten to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft).

  9. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
  10. NOTE: F250-F350 shown, F450-F550 similar.
  11. Remove the cotter pin retainer cap and the drag link-to-sector shaft nut.
    1. Remove and discard the cotter pin.
    2. Remove the sector shaft nut.
      • To install, tighten to 200 Nm (148 lb-ft).
  12. Using the special tool, disconnect the drag link from the sector shaft arm.

  13. F-250, F-350 vehicles 

    NOTE: The steering gear bolts have a dry adhesive on the threads. The bolts must not be reused.
  14. Remove the 3 bolts and the steering gear.
    • Discard the bolts.
    • To install, tighten to 150 Nm (111 lb-ft).

  15. F-450, F-550 vehicles 

    NOTE: The steering gear bolts have a dry adhesive on the threads. The bolts must not be reused.
  16. Remove the 3 bolts and the steering gear.
    • Discard the bolts.
    • To install, tighten to 300 Nm (221 lb-ft).

  17. All vehicles 

    NOTE: The sector shaft arm-to-sector shaft nut has a dry adhesive on the threads. The nut must not be reused.
  18. Remove the sector shaft arm-to-sector shaft nut.
    • Discard the nut.
    • To install, tighten to 475 Nm (350 lb-ft).
  19. F-250, F-350 vehicles 

  20. Using the special tool, remove the sector shaft arm.

  21. F-450, F-550 vehicles 

  22. Using the special tool and 2 grade 8 bolts, 90 mm (3.54 in), separate the sector shaft arm from the steering gear.

  23. All vehicles 

    CAUTION: During installation, do not overtighten the fittings.
  24. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
    • Using the special tool, install 2 new Teflon® seals on the power steering line fittings.
    • Fill the power steering system. For additional information, refer to STEERING SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
