Removal and Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Ford Pickup, 2006 Ford F550 Super Duty, 2006 Ford F450 Super Duty, and 2006 Ford Cab & Chassis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
  2. CAUTION: The alignment of the steering linkage damper bracket is critical to avoid interference, binding or overextension of the damper. Do not loosen or remove the steering linkage damper bracket U-bolt nuts.
  3. Remove the 2 steering linkage damper nuts and bolts.
    • To install, tighten to 80 Nm (59 lb-ft).
  4. NOTE: Make sure the sump (bulge on the steering linkage damper body near the bolt eye) is facing downward before tightening the fasteners.
NOTE: When repairing the steering linkage clean the steering linkage damper shaft of all corrosion and dirt. Buff the damper shaft smooth. Repairing the linkage changes the damper travel slightly. A dirty/corroded shaft can damage the damper seal and create a leak.
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
