Removal and Installation

- If necessary, remove the brake fluid until the brake master cylinder reservoir is half full.
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
- Remove the 2 brake caliper bolts and position the caliper aside.
- Support the caliper using mechanic's wire.
- To install (F-250, F-350 single rear wheel caliper), tighten to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft).
- To install (F-350 dual rear wheel caliper), tighten to 76 Nm (56 lb-ft).
- To install (F-450, F-550 dual rear wheel caliper), tighten to 62 Nm (46 lb-ft).
- Remove the 2 brake pads and inspect for wear or contamination. If equipped, remove the 4 retraction clips.
- Discard the retraction clips.
- Inspect the brake pads for wear and contamination.
- Measure the brake disc thickness.
- Install a new brake disc if not within specification.
- Inspect the disc brake caliper for leaks.
- If leaks are found a new caliper must be installed.
- Inspect the disc brake anchor plate assembly.
- Check the guide pin boots for damage.
- Check the guide pins for binding and damage.
- Install new pins if worn or damaged. Lubricate the pins with silicone brake caliper grease.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- If installing new brake pads, using a suitable tool and a worn brake pad, compress the disc brake caliper pistons into the caliper.
CAUTION:
Do not pry in caliper sight hole to retract pistons as this can damage the pistons and boots.
CAUTION:
Do not allow the brake caliper to hang from the brake hose or damage to the hose can occur.
CAUTION:
Install new brake pads if they are worn past the specified thickness above the metal backing plates. Install new brake pads in axle sets.
CAUTION:
Protect the piston and boots when pushing the caliper piston into the caliper bores.
