Pinpoint Test L: The STOPLAMPS Are On Continuously
- L1 DETERMINE IF ALL STOPLAMPS ARE ILLUMINATED
- Observe the operation of the stoplamps with the brake pedal released.
- Are all of the stoplamps illuminated?
Yes: GO to L2.
No: GO to L6.
- L2 CHECK THE STOPLAMP SWITCH
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Stoplamp Switch C278.
- Do the stoplamps continue to illuminate?
Yes: GO to L3.
No: INSTALL a new stoplamp switch. REFER to STOPLAMP SWITCH . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
- L3 CHECK THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)
- Disconnect: PCM C175b.
- Do the stoplamps continue to illuminate?
Yes: For Escape or Mariner, GO to L4.
For Hybrid, GO to L6.
No: GO to L7.
- L4 CHECK THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) MODULE
- Disconnect: ABS Module C155.
- Do the stoplamps continue to illuminate?
Yes: If Escape or Mariner equipped with speed control, GO to L5.
If Escape or Mariner not equipped with speed control, or Hybrid, GO to L6.
No: GO to L8.
- L5 CHECK THE SPEED CONTROL MODULE
- Disconnect: Speed Control Module C122.
- Do the stoplamps continue to illuminate?
Yes: GO to L6.
No: GO to L9.
- L6 CHECK THE SJB
- Disconnect: SJB C2280c.
- Do the stoplamps continue to illuminate?
Yes: If the high mounted stoplamp continues to illuminate, REPAIR circuit 511 (LG). CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
If the LH rear lamp continues to illuminate, REPAIR circuit 22 (LB/BK). CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
If the RH rear lamp continues to illuminate, REPAIR circuit 810 (RD/LG). CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
No: GO to L10.
- L7 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION
- Disconnect all the PCM connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
Yes: INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - 2.3L or ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - 3.0L (4V) . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
No: The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
- L8 CHECK FOR CORRECT ABS MODULE OPERATION
- Disconnect the ABS module connector.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- pushed-out pins
- Connect the ABS module connector and make sure it seats correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
Yes: INSTALL a new ABS module. REFER to VEHICLE DYNAMIC SYSTEMS . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
No: The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
- L9 CHECK FOR CORRECT SPEED CONTROL MODULE OPERATION
- Disconnect the speed control module connector.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- pushed-out pins
- Connect the speed control module connector and make sure it seats correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
Yes: INSTALL a new speed control module. REFER to SPEED CONTROL . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
No: The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
- L10 CHECK FOR CORRECT SJB OPERATION
- Disconnect all the SJB connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the SJB connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
Yes: INSTALL a new SJB. REFER to SMART JUNCTION BOX (SJB) . TEST the system for normal operation.
No: The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
