Removal and Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Mercury Mariner and 2006 Ford Escape. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Electronic modules are sensitive to static electrical charges. If exposed to these charges, damage may result.
  1. Depower the supplemental restraint system. For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .
  2. Remove the floor console. For additional information, refer to CONSOLE - FLOOR .
  3. Remove the 4 pin-type retainers and the 2 front door scuff plates.
  4. Remove the A-piller trim panel.
  5. Remove the 2 pin-type retainers and the 2 A-pillar lower trim panels.
  6. Remove the instrument panel steering column opening cover.
  7. Remove the LH and RH instrument panel end trim panels.
  8. Remove the instrument cluster. For additional information, refer to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER .
  9. Disconnect the main electrical connector.
  10. Remove the ground wire bolt and position the ground wire aside.
  11. Remove the 2 bolts and position the hood release handle aside.
    • To install, tighten to 6 Nm (53 lb-in).
  12. Remove the steering column coupler access cover.
  13. Remove the steering column pinch bolt and disconnect the intermediate shaft.
    • To install, tighten to 23 Nm (17 lb-ft).
  14. Remove the cover panel pin-type retainer and the cover panel.
    • Release the retaining clip from the instrument panel center brace.
  15. Disconnect the climate control vacuum harness connector.
  16. Disconnect the restraint control module (RCM) electrical connector.
  17. Open the glove compartment door.
  18. Disconnect the temperature control cable from the blend door shaft.
    • Using the special tool, align the locator holes.
    • Release the locking tab.
    • Disconnect the temperature control cable.

  19. Remove the 4 transmission selector lever bolts and position the transmission selector lever aside.
    • Disconnect the electrical connectors.
    • To install, tighten to 22 Nm (16 lb-ft) for automatic transaxle.
    • To install, tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft) for manual transaxle.
  20. Remove the bolts and position the parking brake control aside
    • Disconnect the electrical connectors.
    • To install, tighten to 24 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  21. Open the glove compartment.
    • Press the release tabs inward while lowering the glove compartment.
  22. Disconnect the blower motor electrical connectors.
  23. Disconnect the antenna cable in-line connector.
  24. Remove the cover and the instrument panel cowl top bolt.
    • To install, tighten to 6 Nm (53 lb-in).
  25. Remove the 4 instrument panel center brace bolts.
    • To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  26. Remove the instrument panel cluster opening nut through the instrument cluster opening.
    • To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  27. Remove the 4 instrument panel cowl side bolts.
    • To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  28. Remove the instrument panel.
    NOTE: This step requires an assistant.
  29. NOTE: Upon installation, make sure all instrument panel and audio wiring is correctly routed and not pinched between the instrument panel, brackets or floor plan.
  30. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
