Test D: Intermittent Wipers Inoperative But Operate At High & Low Speed

  1. Using NGS Tester, retrieve DTCs stored in GEM. Clear DTCs. Perform ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and note all DTCs. If no DTCs exist, go to next step. If any DTCs exist, go to appropriate test step. See TEST "D" DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX  table.

    (1) Replace GEM, clear DTCs and retest system.
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using NGS tester, observe PID WPMODE while turning wiper switch through all positions. If PID values do not agree with switch positions, go to next step. If PID values agree with switch positions, go to step  6.
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect multifunction switch 7-pin harness connector C202b. Check wiper portion of multifunction switch. See WIPER SWITCH  under COMPONENT TESTS. If switch is okay, go to next step. If switch is defective, replace multifunction switch. See MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and retest system.
  4. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance in Light Blue/Orange wire between GEM harness connector C201a terminal No. 13 and multifunction switch harness connector C202b terminal No. 6. See Figure and Figure . Measure resistance in Pink/Yellow wire between GEM harness connector C201a terminal No. 22 and multifunction switch harness connector C202b terminal No. 1. If any resistance readings are 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If any resistance readings are more than 5 ohms, repair open in appropriate wire(s) between GEM and multifunction switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Clear DTCs and retest system.
  5. Disconnect GEM 26-pin harness connector C201a. GEM is located on back side of central junction box. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and multifunction switch harness connector C202b terminals No. 6 (Light Blue/Orange) and No. 1 (Pink/Yellow wire). See Figure. If voltage does not exist at either terminal, replace GEM. If voltage exists at either terminal, repair short to voltage in appropriate wire between GEM and multifunction switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Clear DTCs and retest system.
  6. Using NGS tester, observe and record PID WPPRKSW while wipers are running on LOW speed. Use NGS tester to view recorder areas, view WPPRKSW graph. If PID WPPRKSW does not agree with wiper position, go to next step. If PID WPPRKSW indicates PARK when wipers are in park position and notPRK when wipers are in any other position, replace GEM. See GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and retest system.
  7. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect wiper motor harness connector C125. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and wiper motor harness connector C125 terminal No. 2 (White/Black wire). See Figure. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in White/Black wire between wiper motor and central junction box. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Clear DTCs and retest system.
  8. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect GEM 26-pin harness connector C201a. Measure resistance between wiper motor harness connector C125 terminal No. 1 and GEM harness connector C201a terminal No. 15. See Figure and Figure . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, reconnect GEM and go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Light Blue wire between wiper run/park relay and GEM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Clear DTCs and retest system.
  9. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Observe PID WPPRKSW. Attach 30-amp fused jumper wire between ground and wiper motor harness connector C125 terminal No. 1 (Light Blue wire). See Figure. Disconnect ground side of jumper wire and connect to battery voltage. If PID WPPRKSW indicates PARKED when terminal No. 1 is grounded and notPRK when battery voltage is applied, replace wiper motor. See WIPER MOTOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and retest system. If PID does not display as indicated, replace GEM. See GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and retest system.
