Test C: Wipers Operate At Interval Setting But Inoperative At High &/Or Low Speed

- Using NGS tester, retrieve DTCs stored in GEM. Clear DTCs. Perform ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and note all DTCs. If no DTCs exist, go to next step. If any DTCs exist, go to appropriate test step. See TEST "C" DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX table.TEST "C" DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX
DTC Go To Step No. B1342 (1) B1434 6 B1436 6 B1438 2 B1450 2 B1466 2 B1473 2 B1476 2 (1) Replace GEM, clear DTCs and retest system. - Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below center of instrument panel, right of steering column. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Observe PID WPMODE while turning wiper switch through all positions. If PID values agree with switch positions, go to step 6. If PID values do not agree with switch positions, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect multifunction switch 7-pin harness connector C202b. Check wiper portion of multifunction switch. See WIPER SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS. If multifunction switch is okay, go to next step. If multifunction switch is defective, replace defective multifunction switch. See MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and retest system.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance in Light Blue/Orange wire between GEM harness connector C201a terminal No. 13 and multifunction switch harness connector C202b terminal No. 6. See Figure and Figure . Measure resistance in Pink/Yellow wire between GEM harness connector C201a terminal No. 22 and multifunction switch harness connector C202b terminal No. 1. If either resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. See GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and retest system. If either resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in appropriate wire(s) between GEM and multifunction switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Clear DTCs and retest system.
- Disconnect Generic Electronic Module (GEM) 26-pin harness connector C201a. GEM is located on back side of central junction box. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and multifunction switch harness connector C202b terminals No. 6 (Light Blue/Orange wire) and No. 1 (Pink/Yellow wire). See Figure. If voltage does not exist, go to step 14. If any voltage exists, repair short to voltage in appropriate wire(s) between GEM and multifunction switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Clear DTCs and retest system.
- Using NGS tester, observe PID WPHISP while triggering active command SPEED RELAY. If PID WPHISP agrees with command mode, go to step 13. If PID WPHISP does not agree with command mode and display is OFFO-G, go to step 9. If PID WPHISP does not agree with command mode and display is ON-B, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove wiper high/low relay. Check wiper high/low relay. See WIPER HIGH/LOW RELAY under COMPONENT TESTS. If relay is okay, go to next step. If relay is defective, replace defective wiper high/low relay. Clear DTCs and retest system.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect GEM 26-pin harness connector C201a. GEM is located on back side of central junction box. Remove wiper high/low relay from battery junction box. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and high/low relay socket terminal No. 85 (Gray/Light Blue wire). See Figure. If voltage does not exist, go to step 14. If voltage exists, repair short to voltage in Gray/Light Blue wire between high/low relay and GEM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Clear DTCs and retest system.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove wiper high/low relay. Check wiper high/low relay. See WIPER HIGH/LOW RELAY under COMPONENT TESTS. If relay is okay, go to next step. If relay is defective, replace defective wiper high/low relay. Clear DTCs and retest system.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and wiper high/low relay socket terminal No. 86 (White/Black wire). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in White/Black wire between wiper high/low relay and central junction box. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Clear DTCs and retest system.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance between ground and high/low relay socket terminal No. 85 (Gray/Light Blue wire). See Figure. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Gray/Light Blue wire between GEM and wiper high/low relay. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Clear DTCs and retest system.
- Measure resistance between GEM harness connector C201a terminal No. 18 and high/low relay socket terminal No. 85. See Figure and Figure . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Gray/Light Blue wire between high/low relay socket and GEM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Clear DTCs and retest system.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect wiper high/low relay. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Connect a jumper wire between high/low relay terminals No. 30 and 87. The wipers should operate at high speed. Connect a jumper wire between high/low relay terminals No. 37 and 87a. The wipers should operate at low speed. See Figure. If wipers do not operate at specified, remove jumper wire and go to next step. If wipers operate as specified, replace high/low relay.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect wiper motor harness connector C125. Measure resistance in Dark Blue/Orange wire between wiper high/low relay socket terminal No. 87 and wiper motor harness connector C125 terminal No. 5. See Figure and Figure . Measure resistance in White wire between high/low relay socket terminal No. 87a and wiper motor harness connector C125 terminal No. 4. Measure resistance between ground and wiper motor harness connector C125 terminal No. 3 (Black wire). If any resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace wiper motor. If any resistance reading is more than 5 ohms, repair open in appropriate wire(s) between high/low relay and wiper motor. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Clear DTCs and retest system.
- Disconnect all GEM harness connectors and remove GEM from central junction box. Check for backed out, corroded or loose terminals. Repair as necessary. Connect all GEM harness connectors and connect to central junction box. Operate all windows from all switches. If problem still exists, replace GEM. See GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If problem does not exist, system is okay.
