Removal and Installation

CAUTION:
  • Brake fluid is harmful to painted and plastic surfaces. If brake fluid is spilled onto a painted or plastic surface, immediately wash it with water.
  • Electronic modules are sensitive to electrical charges. The anti-lock brake system (ABS) module can be damaged if exposed to these charges.

    All vehicles 

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  2. Remove the air cleaner and the air cleaner outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION - AIR CLEANER - 2.3L and REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION - AIR CLEANER INTAKE PIPE - 2.3L or REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION - AIR CLEANER - 3.0L and REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION - AIR CLEANER INTAKE PIPE - 3.0L .
  3. Disconnect the brake line-to-hydraulic control unit (HCU) fittings.
    • To install, tighten to 15 N.m (11 lb-ft).
  4. Vehicles with 3.0L engine 

  5. Remove the HCU-to-master cylinder brake tube fittings.
    • To install, tighten to 15 N.m (11 lb-ft).
  6. All vehicles 

  7. Remove the 3 HCU bracket-to-frame bolts.
    • To install, tighten to 23 N.m (17 lb-ft).
  8. Disconnect the electrical connector by rotating the protective cover.

  9. Remove the 3 bracket-to-HCU bolts.
    • To install, tighten to 9 N.m (80 lb-in).
  10. Remove the HCU.
  11. Remove the 3 screws and the ABS module.
    • To install, tighten to 2 N.m (18 lb-in).
  12. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
