Test F: No Communication With Generic Electronic Module/Central Timer Module

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Ford Pickup. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below center of instrument panel, right of steering column. On manual transmission models, depress clutch pedal. Observe GEM PIDs IGN_A, IGN_S, IGN_OG/L and IGN_RD while turning ignition switch through all positions. If PID values agree with switch positions, go to next step. If PID values do not agree with switch positions, repair appropriate ignition switch circuit(s). See POWER DISTRIBUTION in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL . Clear DTCs and retest system.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Check fuses No. 15 (5-amp) at central junction box (interior fuse panel) and fuse No. 103 (50-amp) at battery junction box in engine compartment. If fuses are good, go to next step. If any fuse(s) are blown, go to step  5.
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect central junction box harness connector C270a. Measure voltage between ground and central junction box harness connector C270a terminal No. 11. See Figure. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Tan/Black wire between central junction box and battery junction box. See POWER DISTRIBUTION in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Clear DTCs and retest system.
  4. Disconnect Central Timer Module/Generic Electronic Module (CTM/GEM) from 18-pin socket C201d on back of central junction box. See CENTRAL TIMER MODULE/GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Reconnect central junction box harness connector C270a. Measure voltage between ground and CTM/GEM socket C201d terminal No. 4 (Tan/Black wire). See Figure. Measure voltage between ground and CTM/GEM socket C201d terminal No. 16. If battery voltage exists at both terminals, go to step  8. If battery voltage does not exist at either terminal, replace central junction box. Clear DTCs and retest system.
  5. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect CTM/GEM from socket C201d in back of central junction box. See CENTRAL TIMER MODULE/GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check fuse No. 15 (5-amp) at central junction box and fuse No. 103 (50-amp) at battery junction box in engine compartment. If fuse No. 103 is blown, go to next step. If both fuses are good, go to step  7. If fuse No. 15 is blown, go to step  10.
  6. Disconnect central junction box harness connector C270a. Measure resistance between ground and central junction box harness connector C270a terminal No. 11 (Tan/Black wire). If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace central junction box. See CENTRAL JUNCTION BOX (CJB)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and retest system. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair open in Tan/Black wire between central junction box and battery junction box. See POWER DISTRIBUTION in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Clear DTCs and retest system.
  7. Disconnect central junction box harness connector C270a. Measure resistance between central junction box connector C270a terminal No. 11 (component side) and CTM/GEM internal connector C201d terminals No. 4 and 16. If both resistances are 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If either resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace central junction box. Clear DTCs and retest system.
  8. Disconnect CTM/GEM 26-pin harness connector C201a. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 26 (Black/Light Blue wire) at CTM/GEM harness connector C201a. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Black/Light Blue wire between CTM/GEM and ground. Ground is located behind left kick panel. Clear DTCs and retest system.
  9. Measure resistance between ground and CTM/GEM harness connector C201a terminal No. 14 (Black/Light Blue wire). If resistance is 5 ohms or less, diagnose module communications network problem. See appropriate MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - F150 PICKUP article. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Black/Light Blue wire between CTM/GEM and ground. Ground is located behind left kick panel. Clear DTCs and retest system.
  10. Measure resistance between ground and CTM/GEM internal connector C201d terminal No. 4. See Figure. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, replace central junction box. See CENTRAL JUNCTION BOX (CJB)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and retest system. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace CTM/GEM. See CENTRAL TIMER MODULE/GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and retest system.
