Test D: Intermittent Wipers Inoperative But Operate At High & Low Speed

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below center of instrument panel, right of steering column. On manual transmission models, depress clutch pedal. Observe CTM/GEM PIDs IGN_A, IGN_S, IGN_OG/L and IGN_RD while turning ignition switch through all positions. If PID values agree with switch positions, go to next step. If PID values do not agree with switch positions, repair appropriate ignition switch circuit(s). See POWER DISTRIBUTION in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Clear DTCs and retest system.
  2. Using NGS Tester retrieve DTCs stored in CTM/GEM. Clear DTCs. Perform ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and note all DTCs. If no DTCs exist, go to next step. If any DTCs exist, go to appropriate test step. See TEST "D" DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX  table.

    (1) Replace GEM/CTM, clear DTCs and retest system. See CENTRAL TIMER MODULE/GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  3. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using NGS tester, observe PID WPMODE while turning wiper switch through all positions. If PID values do not agree with switch positions, go to next step. If PID values agree with switch positions, go to step  7.
  4. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect multifunction switch 7-pin harness connector C202b. Check wiper switch. See WIPER SWITCH  under COMPONENT TESTS. If wiper switch is okay, go to next step. If wiper switch is defective, replace defective multifunction switch. See MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and retest system.
  5. Disconnect CTM/GEM 26-pin harness connector C201a. CTM/GEM is located on back side of central junction box. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and multifunction switch harness connector C202b terminals No. 1 (Pink/Yellow wire) and No. 6 (Light Blue/Orange). See Figure. If voltage does not exist at either terminal, go to next step. If voltage exists at either terminal, repair short to voltage in appropriate wire between CTM/GEM and multifunction switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Clear DTCs and retest system.
  6. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance in Light Blue/Orange wire between CTM/GEM harness connector C201a terminal No. 13 and multifunction switch harness connector C202b terminal No. 6. See Figure and Figure . Measure resistance in Pink/Yellow wire between CTM/GEM harness connector C201a terminal No. 22 and multifunction switch harness connector C202b terminal No. 1. If resistance readings are 5 ohms or less in all circuits, replace CTM/GEM. See CENTRAL TIMER MODULE/GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and retest system. If any resistance readings are more than 5 ohms, repair open in appropriate wire(s) between CTM/GEM and multifunction switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Clear DTCs and retest system.
  7. Using NGS tester, observe and record PID WPPRKSW while wipers are running on LOW speed. Use NGS tester to view recorder areas, view WPPRKSW graph. If PID WPPRKSW does not agree with wiper position, go to next step. If PID WPPRKSW indicates PARK when wipers are in park position and notPRK when wipers are in any other position, replace CTM/GEM. See CENTRAL TIMER MODULE/GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and retest system.
  8. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect wiper motor harness connector C125. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and wiper motor harness connector C125 terminal No. 2 (White/Black wire). See Figure. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in White/Black wire between wiper motor and central junction box. Clear DTCs and retest system.
  9. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect CTM/GEM 26-pin harness connector C201a. Measure resistance in Gray/Light Blue wire between wiper motor harness connector C125 terminal No. 1 and CTM/GEM harness connector C201a terminal No. 15. See Figure and Figure . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, reconnect CTM/GEM and go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Light Blue wire between wiper run/park relay and CTM/GEM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Clear DTCs and retest system.
  10. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Observe PID WPPRKSW. Attach 30-amp fused jumper wire between ground and wiper motor harness connector C125 terminal No. 1 (Light Blue wire). See Figure. Disconnect ground side of jumper wire and connect to battery voltage. If PID WPPRKSW indicates PARKED when terminal No. 1 is grounded and notPRK when battery voltage is applied, replace wiper motor. See WIPER MOTOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and retest system. If PID does not display as indicated, replace CTM/GEM. See CENTRAL TIMER MODULE/GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and retest system.
