Rear Drive Shaft (One-Piece): Installation

- Inspect the extension housing seal for damage. Install a NEW seal as necessary. Check to see if a paint mark is present on the front of the drive shaft and on the end of the transmission output shaft.
- Vehicles equipped with a 4R70W automatic transmission, will have the paint mark. Vehicles equipped with 4R100 automatic transmission, will not have the paint mark. Lubricate the slip yoke spline with grease.
- If paint markings are present, align the factory-made paint marks on the output shaft and drive shaft and position the drive shaft in the transmission. If paint markings are not present, align the index marks made in removal procedure and position the drive shaft in the transmission.
- To make sure that the yoke seats squarely on the rear pinion flange, tighten the drive shaft-to-rear pinion flange bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern as shown to specification. See Fig 1. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Position the drive shaft flange yoke on the rear pinion flange with the index marks aligned, and install the bolts. Fill transmission to proper level with appropriate fluid. See SPECIFICATIONS in appropriate AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS article.
NOTE:
Depending on the paint markings, there are 2 methods of indexing the drive shaft and the output shaft.
CAUTION:
Install the drive shaft with NEW bolts. If NEW bolts are not available, apply sealer to the threads of the original bolts. The drive shaft flange yoke fits tightly on the rear pinion flange pilot.
