Removal and Installation

WARNING: When carrying out maintenance on the starting system, be aware that the heavy gauge leads are connected directly to the battery. Make sure the protective caps are in place when maintenance is completed.
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  2. Remove the air cleaner. For additional information, refer to INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING - 3.0L (4V) .
  3. Disconnect the transmission shift cable-to-manual lever.
  4. Remove the 2 transmission cable bracket bolts and detach the wire harness retainer and position aside the transmission cable and bracket.
    • To install, tighten to 23 Nm (17 lb-ft).
  5. Remove the starter motor solenoid wire nut.
    • To install, tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in).
  6. Remove the starter motor solenoid battery cable nut and position aside the cables.
    • To install, tighten to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft).
  7. Remove the 2 starter motor bolts and the starter motor.
    • Install the upper and lower starter motor bolts finger-tight.
    • Tighten the upper bolt to 27 Nm (20 lb-ft).
    • Tighten the lower bolt to 27 Nm (20 lb-ft).
  8. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
