Power Transfer Unit (PTU) - Automatic Transaxle

    All vehicles 

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
  2. Disconnect the battery. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  3. Drain the power transfer unit (PTU). For additional information, refer to POWER TRANSFER UNIT (PTU) DRAINING AND FILLING - AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE .
    4. CAUTION: A new power transfer unit (PTU) intermediate shaft seal must be installed whenever the intermediate shaft or PTU is removed from the vehicle.
  4. Remove the front RH intermediate shaft. For additional information, refer to FRONT DRIVE HALFSHAFTS .
  5. Remove the driveshaft. For additional information, refer to DRIVESHAFT .
  6. Remove the 4 bolts and the crossmember brace.

    7. Vehicles equipped with 3.0L 

  7. Remove the generator. For additional information, refer to GENERATOR AND REGULATOR .

    8. All vehicles 

  8. Remove the exhaust as required. For additional information, refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM .
  9. Remove the 3 PTU heat shield bolts and the PTU heat shield.
  10. Remove the 6 PTU-to-engine bracket bolts and the bracket.
  11. Disconnect the PTU vent tube and position it aside.
  12. Remove the 4 PTU-to-transaxle bolts.
  13. Remove the PTU.
