Removal and Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis and 2006 Ford Crown Victoria. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Do not use oil-based or grease-based lubricants on the isolators. They may cause deterioration of the rubber.
CAUTION: Oil-based or grease-based lubricants on the isolators may cause the exhaust hanger isolators to separate from the exhaust hanger bracket during vehicle operation.
    WARNING: If equipped with fire suppression system, depower the system. For important safety warnings and procedures, refer to FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM .
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
  2. Remove the rear suspension lateral arms. For additional information, refer to REAR SUSPENSION .
  3. Remove the rear coil springs. For additional information, refer to REAR SUSPENSION .
  4. Remove the 2 nuts and the clamp.
    • To install, tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
  5. NOTE: Check the isolator for wear or damage. Install a new isolator as necessary.

  6. Detach the isolator.
  7. NOTE: Check the isolator for wear or damage. Install a new isolator as necessary.
    NOTE: Carefully turn the muffler and tailpipe assembly counterclockwise around the rear axle to remove.

  8. Detach the isolator and remove the muffler and tailpipe.
  9. NOTE: Install new exhaust fasteners. Do not tighten the fasteners until all components are assembled.
    NOTE: Alternately tighten the fasteners to specification, to draw flanges together evenly.

  10. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  11. WARNING: If equipped with fire suppression system, repower the system. For important safety warnings and procedures, refer to FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM .
  12. If equipped with fire suppression system, repower the system.
