Test B: Mirrors Inoperative

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Lincoln Blackwood. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: DSM PID MIR_SEL will not read PASSENGER until mirror control switch is moved horizontally or vertically.
  1. Ensure gearshift selector is in Park and ignition is off. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester following manufacturer's instructions. Retrieve Driver's Seat Module (DSM) DTCs. Clear continuous DTCs. Perform DSM self-test. If DTCs do not exist, go to next step. If DTC B1667 or B1668 exists, go to step  10. If DTC B1669 or B1670 exists, go to step  14. If DTC B1697, B1735, B1739, B1743 or B1747 exists, go to step  3. If DTC B1342 exists, replace DSM. See DRIVER'S SEAT MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Recheck system operation.
  2. Using NGS tester, monitor DSM PIDs MIR_SEL, MIRV_SW and MIRH_SW while operating mirror control switch to all positions. If PID values do not agree with mirror control switch positions and central junction box fuse No. 4 is okay, go to next step. If PID values agree with mirror control switch positions, go to step  9. If PID values do not agree with mirror control switch positions, and central junction box fuse No. 4 (7.5-amp) fails while operating mirror control switch, go to step  7.
  3. Remove mirror control switch and disconnect harness connector. Test mirror control switch. See MIRROR CONTROL SWITCH  tables under COMPONENT TESTS. If mirror control switch is okay, go to next step. If mirror control switch is defective, replace mirror control switch. See MIRROR CONTROL SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  4. Measure voltage between ground and mirror control switch harness connector (Orange/Light Green wire). If more than 10 volts exists, go to next step. If 10 volts or less exists, repair open in Orange/Light Green wire between central junction box and mirror control switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Recheck system operation.
  5. Measure resistance between ground and mirror control switch harness connector (Black/Light Blue wire). If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Black/Light Blue wire between mirror control switch and ground. Ground point is located behind left kick panel. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  6. Disconnect DSM harness connector C341b. DSM is located under driver's side seat. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and Dark Blue/Orange wire, Dark Green/Orange wire, Red/Orange wire, Violet/Orange wire and Yellow/Black wire at mirror control switch harness connector. If voltage does not exist at all terminals, go to next step. If voltage exists at any terminal, repair short to power in appropriate wire between mirror control switch and DSM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  7. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance between ground and Dark Blue/Orange wire, Dark Green/Orange wire, Red/Orange wire, Violet/Orange wire and Yellow/Black wire at mirror control switch harness connector. If all resistances are more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If any resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in appropriate wire between mirror control switch and DSM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Recheck system operation.
  8. Measure resistance in Dark Blue/Orange wire, Dark Green/Orange wire, Red/Orange wire, Violet/Orange wire and Yellow/Black wire between DSM harness connector C341b and mirror control switch harness connector. See Fig 1. If all resistances are 5 ohms or less, replace DSM. See DRIVER'S SEAT MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Recheck system operation. If any resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in appropriate wire between DSM and mirror control switch. Recheck system operation. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  9. Using NGS tester DSM active command, toggle DR_UP to ON and OFF. Toggle DR_DOWN to ON and OFF. Toggle DR_LEFT to ON and OFF. Toggle DR_RIGHT to ON and OFF. Toggle PR_UP to ON and OFF. Toggle PR_DOWN to ON and OFF. Toggle PR_LEFT to ON and OFF. Toggle PR_RIGHT to ON and OFF. If mirrors did not operate in all directions, go to next step. If mirrors operated in all directions, go to step  14.
  10. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove driver's door trim panel. Disconnect driver's side mirror 12-pin harness connector C520a. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between driver's side mirror harness connector C520a terminals No. 5 (Dark Blue wire) and No. 9 (Yellow/Light Blue wire) while toggling DSM active command DR_UP and DR_DOWN to ON and OFF. See Fig 2. Measure voltage between driver's side mirror harness connector C520a terminals No. 7 (Red wire) and No. 12 (Yellow/Red wire) while toggling DSM active command DR_LEFT and DR_RIGHT to ON and OFF. If voltage does not change from zero volts to 12 volts when each active command is toggled ON, go to next step. If voltage changes from zero volts to 12 volts when each active command is toggled ON, replace driver's side mirror. See SIDE MIRROR ASSEMBLY  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs. Repeat DSM self-test.
  11. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect DSM harness connector C341a. DSM is located under driver's side seat. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and driver's side mirror harness connector C520a terminals as specified. See DRIVER'S SIDE MIRROR CIRCUIT IDENTIFICATION  table. See Fig 2. If voltage does not exist at all terminals, go to next step. If voltage exists at any terminal, repair short to power in appropriate wire between DSM and driver's side mirror. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Recheck system operation.
  12. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance between ground and driver's side mirror harness connector C520a terminals as specified. See DRIVER'S SIDE MIRROR CIRCUIT IDENTIFICATION  table. See Fig 2. If all resistances are more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If any resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in appropriate wire between DSM and driver's side mirror. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Recheck system operation.
  13. Measure resistance between DSM harness connector C341a terminals and driver's side mirror harness connector C520a terminals as specified. See DRIVER'S SIDE MIRROR CIRCUIT IDENTIFICATION  table. See Fig 1 and Fig 2 . If all resistances are 5 ohms or less, replace DSM. See DRIVER'S SEAT MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Recheck system operation. If any resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in appropriate wire between DSM and driver's side mirror. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
    DRIVER'S SIDE MIRROR CIRCUIT IDENTIFICATION

    6 12 Yellow/Red
    7 7 Red
    9 5 Dark Blue
    10 9 Yellow/Light Blue
  14. Ensure gearshift selector is in Park and ignition switch is in LOCK position. Disconnect passenger's side mirror harness connector C601a. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between passenger's side mirror harness connector C601a terminals No. 5 (White/Violet wire) and No. 9 (Violet wire) while toggling DSM active command PR_UP and PR_DOWN to ON and OFF. See Fig 2. Measure voltage between passenger's side mirror harness connector C601a terminals No. 4 (Dark Green wire) and No. 12 (White/Light Green wire) while toggling DSM active command PR_LEFT and PR_RIGHT to ON and OFF. If voltage does not change from zero volts to 12 volts when each active command is toggled ON, go to next step. If voltage changes from zero volts to 12 volts when each active command is toggled ON, replace passenger's side mirror. See SIDE MIRROR ASSEMBLY  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs. Perform DSM self-test.
  15. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect DSM harness connector C341a. DSM is located under driver's side seat. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and passenger's side mirror harness connector C601a terminals as specified. See PASSENGER'S SIDE MIRROR CIRCUIT IDENTIFICATION  table. See Fig 2. If voltage does not exist at any terminal, go to next step. If voltage exists at any terminal, repair short to power in appropriate wire between DSM and passenger's side mirror. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Recheck system operation.
  16. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance between ground and passenger's side mirror harness connector C601a terminals as specified. See PASSENGER'S SIDE MIRROR CIRCUIT IDENTIFICATION  table. If all resistances are more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If any resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in appropriate wire between DSM and passenger's side mirror. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Recheck system operation.
  17. Measure resistance between DSM harness connector C341a terminals and passenger's side mirror harness connector C601a terminals as specified. See PASSENGER'S SIDE MIRROR CIRCUIT IDENTIFICATION  table. See Fig 2 and Fig 3 . If all resistances are 5 ohms or less, replace DSM. See DRIVER'S SEAT MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Recheck system operation. If any resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in appropriate wire between DSM C341a terminals and passenger's side mirror. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
