Crankshaft Rear Seal with Retainer Plate: Installation
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis and 2006 Ford Crown Victoria. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Clean and inspect the mating surface.
- Apply a bead of gasket maker to the rear crankshaft seal retainer mating surface on the engine block.
- Install the rear oil seal retainer plate and loosely install the 6 crankcase rear seal retainer plate bolts.
- Tighten the rear seal retainer plate bolts in the sequence shown.
- Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- Use the special tools to install the crankshaft rear seal.
- Use the special tools to install the crankshaft oil slinger.
- Inspect the oil pan. Clean the mating surface for the oil pan with silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging.
- Position the oil pump screen and pickup tube in the oil pan and position the oil pan and new gasket into the vehicle.
- Position the oil pump screen and pickup tube and install the bolts.
- Tighten the oil pump screen and pickup tube-to-oil pump bolts to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- Tighten the oil pump screen and pickup tube-to-spacer bolt to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
- Apply silicone gasket and sealant at the rear seal retainer-to-cylinder block sealing surface.
- Apply silicone gasket and sealant at the engine front cover-to-cylinder block mating surface.
- Install the oil pan bolts, tighten in the sequence shown, in 2 stages.
- Stage 1: Tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
- Stage 2: Rotate an additional 60 degrees.
- Attach the 2 pin-type wire harness retainers.
- Align the engine mount studs and lower the engine.
- Install the 2 engine mount nuts.
- Tighten to 90 Nm (66 lb-ft).
- Install the engine-to-transmission spacer plate.
- Install the flexplate. For additional information, refer to FLEXPLATE .
- Fill the engine with clean engine oil.
- Start the engine and check for leaks.
- If equipped with fire suppression system, repower the system.
CAUTION:
Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old sealant.
NOTE:
Clean sealing surfaces with metal surface prep. Allow to dry until there is no sign of wetness, or 4 minutes, whichever is longer, failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage.
NOTE:
The rear crankshaft seal retainer plate does not have a sealant groove. Gasket maker must be applied to the rear crankshaft seal retainer mating surface on the engine block.
NOTE:
Lubricate the inner lip of the crankshaft rear seal with engine oil.
CAUTION:
Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges, which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old sealant.
CAUTION:
Make sure to install a new O-ring seal. A missing or damaged O-ring seal can cause foam in the lubrication system, low oil pressure and severe engine damage.
NOTE:
Clean and inspect the mating surfaces and install a new O-ring seal. Lubricate the O-ring seal with clean engine oil prior to installation.
NOTE:
If the oil pan is not secured within 4 minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned with metal surface cleaner. Allow to dry until there is no sign of wetness, or 4 minutes, whichever is longer. Failure to follow this procedure can result in future oil leakage.
