Removal and Installation

WARNING:
Use of any other than approved DOT 3 brake fluid will cause permanent damage to brake components and will render the brakes inoperative. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

CAUTION:
Brake fluid is harmful to painted and plastic surfaces. If brake fluid is spilled onto a painted or plastic surface, immediately wash it with water.
- Remove the air cleaner assembly. For additional information, refer to INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING .
- Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
- Disconnect the 6 brake tube fittings.
- To install, tighten to 15 Nm (11 lb-ft).
- Disconnect the anti-lock brake system (ABS) module electrical connector.
- Remove the mounting bracket-to-HCU bolts.
- To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
- Remove the HCU.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- Bleed the brake system. For additional information, refer to BRAKE SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
NOTE:
Clean and plug each port of the hydraulic control unit (HCU) to prevent brake fluid from spilling and contaminates from entering the HCU.
