Drive Shaft Center Bearing: Assembly

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Ford Pickup. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Install the bearing on the coupling shaft with the turned-in lip toward the dust slinger. Install the drive shaft center bearing bracket with the deep flange facing rearward.
  1. Using a suitable press, install the dust slinger on the coupling shaft. See Figure . Install the drive shaft center bearing support on the coupling shaft. See Figure . Install the rubber insulator in the drive shaft center bearing bracket. See Figure .
  2. Position a drive shaft slip yoke boot clamp on the coupling shaft stub shaft. Slide the small opening end of the slip yoke boot on the coupling shaft stub shaft, as far as it will travel. See Fig 1 . Using the Keystone Clamp Installer (211-002, T63P-9171-A), crimp the drive shaft slip yoke boot clamp. See Fig 2 .
  3. CAUTION: The coupling shaft splines and drive shaft slip yoke splines are either a square tooth design or an involute design. DO NOT mix the 2 different design splines on the same two-piece assembly.
  4. Pull the slip yoke boot toward the coupling shaft. Using Premium Long-Life Grease (XG-1-C), lubricate the coupling shaft splines with approximately 0.24 oz. of lubricant.
  5. Position the slip yoke boot clamp. Align the blind splines, and install the drive shaft slip yoke on the coupling shaft. See Fig 3 .
  6. Remove any excess grease from the slip yoke boot and drive shaft slip yoke surfaces. Position the slip yoke boot over the slip yoke boot groove. Set the drive shaft assembled length to specification. See Fig 4 .
  7. Measure from the stub shaft weld to the "U" joint centerline. Bleed the air from the slip yoke boot. See Fig 4 . Using the keystone clamp installer, crimp the large drive shaft slip yoke boot clamp. Install the drive shaft. See FRONT DRIVE SHAFT  or REAR DRIVE SHAFT (TWO PIECE)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  8. Road test the vehicle. If a vibration exists, insert 0.062" (1.59 mm) shims, as necessary, between the drive shaft center bearing bracket and support plate (on the bolt ends of the drive shaft center bearing bracket) to reduce compression of the rubber insulator.
