Trouble Shooting

  1. Fuel gauge accuracy can be affected by fast filling (CNG only) and fuel system leaks. Make sure the following conditions DO NOT exist before continuing trouble shooting:
    • After fast fill, fuel gauge can drop up to 1/16 tank. This is normal.
    • Fast filling causes tank temperature to drop to low temperatures. If this occurs with ignition switch in RUN position, AFCM will store Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) in error. After temperature returns to normal operating range, DTCs will persist and need to be cleared.
    • Fast filling with ignition switch in RUN position will cause fuel gauge to move very slowly toward full. This is normal and can be eliminated by turning ignition switch to LOCK position before filling.
    • Fuel leaks will cause inaccurate fuel gauge readings. If leak exceeds instrument cluster and AFCM ability to update fuel gauge, gauge may read full when tanks are empty.
    • After fuel system has been drained for repair, fuel gauge will read empty until ignition switch is turned from LOCK to RUN positions 4-5 times. After 4-5 times, system will build pressure and fuel gauge will display properly.
  2. Verify customer complaint by observing fuel gauge, in both fuel modes, to determine correct operation with ignition switch in RUN position with engine off, in START position before ignition switch is released and in RUN position with engine running.
  3. Visually inspect for obvious signs of damage to fuel tank(s), solenoids, fuel line(s), AFCM and sensors. Visually inspect fuses No. 2 and No. 6 (5-amp), No. 16 (30-amp) in central junction box and fuses No. 1 (3-amp) and No. 2 (10-amp) in fuse and relay module. Inspect wiring harness and connectors for loose or corroded connections. If damage is found, repair and test system. If cause of fault is not evident, see SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM .
