Test C: Incorrect Fuel Gauge Indication (Gasoline Mode)

NOTE: Verify that gasoline mode is selected.
  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect fuel pump intercept harness and reconnect to original vehicle harness. Move fuel selector switch to gasoline mode. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If fuel gauge operates correctly, go to next step. If fuel gauge does not operate correctly, go to step  4.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Measure resistance between both fuel pump intercept harness connectors White wire terminals. Also measure resistance between fuel pump intercept harness connector terminal No. 1 (White wire) and ground. See Fig 1. If resistance is less than 5 ohms between connectors and greater than 10k/ohms to ground, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms between connectors or less than 10k/ohms to ground, repair open or short to ground in White wire and test system operation.
  3. Ensure ignition switch is in OFF position. Measure resistance between both fuel pump intercept harness connectors terminals No. 3 (White wire). Also measure resistance between fuel pump intercept harness connector terminal No. 3 and ground. See Fig 2. If resistance is less than 5 ohms between connectors and greater than 10k/ohms to ground, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms between connectors and less than 10k/ohms to ground, repair open or short to ground in White wire and test system operation.
  4. Ensure ignition is in OFF position. Disconnect instrument cluster 22-pin harness connector. Measure resistance between instrument cluster 22-pin harness connector terminal No. 3 (Yellow/White wire) and fuel pump intercept harness connector terminal No. 3 (Yellow/White wire). Also measure resistance between instrument cluster harness connector terminal No. 3 (Yellow/White wire) and ground. See Fig 3. If resistance is less than 5 ohms between connectors and greater than 10k/ohms to ground, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms between connectors or less than 10k/ohms to ground, repair open or short to ground in White wire and test system operation.
  5. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between instrument cluster 22-pin harness connector terminal No. 3 and ground. If any voltage is present, repair short to voltage in Yellow/White wire and test system operation. If no voltage is present, replace fuel pump assembly and test system operation.
