Test Procedure

- DF1 DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) P0500 AND P1501
- Possible causes:
- VSS signal circuit open
- VSS signal circuit short to ground
- PCM
- ABS module
- Key ON, engine OFF.
- Carry out the ABS self-test.
Are any ABS module DTCs present?
Yes No REFER to VEHICLE DYNAMIC SYSTEMS . GO to DF2. - Possible causes:
- DF2 CHECK THE PCM VEHICLE SPEED SIGNAL INPUT
- Access the PCM and monitor the VSS PID.
- Road test the vehicle while monitoring the VSS PID.
Does the VSS PID increase as the vehicle speed is increased and decrease as the vehicle speed is decreased?
Yes No UNABLE to duplicate the condition. CHECK for a loose connection, and damaged or corroded terminals. WIGGLE the harness attempting to recreate the concern. REPAIR as necessary. REFER to SYMPTOM CHARTS , if a driveability concern exists. GO to DF3. - DF3 CHECK THE VEHICLE SPEED SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Key in OFF position.
- PCM connector disconnected.
- Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) Module connector disconnected.
- Measure the resistance between:
( + ) PCM Connector, Harness Side ( - ) Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) Module Connector, Harness Side VSC - Pin B35 VSC - Pin 21
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes No GO to DF4. REPAIR the open circuit. CLEAR the DTCs.
REPEAT the self-test. - DF4 CHECK THE VEHICLE SPEED SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
Is the resistance greater than 10K ohms?
Yes No GO to DF5. REPAIR the short circuit. CLEAR the DTCs.
REPEAT the self-test. - DF5 CHECK THE VEHICLE SPEED SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Key ON, engine OFF.
- Measure the voltage between:
( + ) PCM Connector, Harness Side ( - ) VSC - Pin B35 Ground
Is any voltage present?
Yes No REPAIR the short circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. If the DTC is present again, REPEAT the self-test. GO to DF6. - DF6 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION
- Disconnect all the PCM connectors.
- Visually inspect for:
- pushed out pins
- corrosion
- Connect all the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Carry out the PCM self-test and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Yes No INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to FLASH ELECTRICALLY ERASABLE PROGRAMMABLE READ ONLY MEMORY (EEPROM) . The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
