Removal and Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2005 Lincoln LS. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Suspension fasteners are critical parts because they affect the performance of vital components and systems and their failure can result in major repair expense. A new part with the same part number must be installed if installation is necessary. Do not use a new part of lesser quality or substitute design. Torque values must be used as specified during reassembly to make sure of correct retention of these parts.
NOTE: New control arm cam bolts and nuts must be installed whenever they are removed from the lower control arm.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
  2. Using the special tool, support the engine.
  3. Remove the front tire and wheel assemblies. For additional information, refer to WHEELS & TIRES .
    4. NOTE: When installing, loosely install the front bolts and then the rear bolts. With the vehicle at curb height, tighten the bolts to the specifications.
  4. Remove the LH I-brace 2 front bolts.
    • To install, tighten to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft).
  5. Remove the LH I-brace 2 rear bolts.
    • To install, tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).
    6. NOTE: When installing, loosely install the front bolts and then the rear bolts. With the vehicle at curb height, tighten the bolts to the specifications.
    NOTE: When installing the rear bolts, make sure the insulators (4 per side) are properly installed.
  6. Remove the RH I-brace 2 front bolts.
    • To install, tighten to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft).
  7. Remove the RH I-brace 2 rear bolts.
    • To install, tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).
    8. NOTE: When installing, use new steering gear nuts.
  8. Remove the 3 nuts and bolts and position the steering gear aside.
    • To install, tighten to 90 Nm (66 lb-ft).
    9. NOTE: When installing, loosely install the bolts. With the vehicle at curb height, tighten the bolts to the specification.
    NOTE: When installing, use new rear control arm cam bolts and nuts.
  9. Remove the 2 rear control arm cam bolts and nuts (1 cam bolt and nut per side).
    • To install, tighten to 175 Nm (129 lb-ft).
  10. Remove the LH I-brace bracket shoulder bolt.
    • To install, tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).
  11. Remove the LH I-brace bracket.
  12. Remove the RH I-brace bracket shoulder bolt.
    • To install, tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).
  13. Remove the RH I-brace bracket.
  14. Remove the 2 engine mount nuts.
    • To install, tighten to 63 Nm (46 lb-ft).
    15. NOTE: When installing, use new engine crossmember bolts.
  15. Remove the 4 engine crossmember bolts (2 per side) and remove the engine crossmember.
    • To install, tighten to 103 Nm (76 lb-ft).
    16. NOTE: A front wheel alignment is required when the crossmember or any of the control arm cam bolts and nuts are removed. For additional information, refer to SUSPENSION SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
  16. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
