Test O: Air Bag Indicator Is Never/Always On

  1. If air bag indicator is always on, go to AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS. If air bag indicator is never on, go to next step.
    2. WARNING: Ensure air bag system is deactivated before performing following test procedure. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS.
  2. Deactivate air bag system. See air bag systems. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Restraints Control Module (RCM) harness connector C2041a. Connect a fused jumper wire (10-amp) between harness connector C2041a terminal No. 12 (Black/Yellow wire) and ground. See Fig 1. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If air bag indicator illuminates, go to step  5. If air bag indicator does not illuminate, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Measure resistance between harness connector C220a terminal No. 13 (Black/Yellow wire). See Figure. If resistance is greater than 10k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 10k/ohms, repair open in Black/Yellow wire and test system operation.
  4. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between harness connector C220a terminal No. 13 (Black/Yellow wire). If any voltage is present, repair short to power in Black/Yellow wire and test system operation. If no voltage is present, go to step  6.
  5. Disconnect all RCM module harness connectors. Inspect harness connectors for corrosion and pushed out pins. Reconnect all RCM module harness connectors, ensuring they are connected correctly. Operate system and verify if concern is still present. If concern is still present, replace RCM module. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS. If concern is not present, system is operating correctly at this time. Clear DTCs and perform self-test.
  6. Disconnect all instrument cluster harness connectors. Inspect harness connectors for corrosion and pushed out pins. Connect all instrument cluster harness connectors, ensuring they are connected correctly. Operate system and verify if concern is still present. If concern is still present, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If concern is not present, system is operating correctly at this time.
