Test G: Tachometer Inoperative

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Lincoln Blackwood. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below center of instrument panel, right of steering column. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Trigger instrument cluster active command TCHOMETER and scroll in increments of 50%. Observe tachometer. If tachometer does not increase in increments of 3000 RPM for every 50%, go to next step. If tachometer increases in increments of 3000 RPM for every 50%, tachometer is okay. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  2. Disconnect all instrument cluster harness connectors. Inspect harness connectors for corrosion and pushed out pins. Connect all instrument cluster harness connectors, ensuring they are connected correctly. Operate system and verify if concern is still present. If concern is still present, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If concern is not present, system is operating correctly at this time.
