Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Deactivation and Reactivation: Deactivation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2005 Lincoln LS. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) vehicle and when handling an air bag module. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
WARNING: Carry a live air bag module with the air bag and trim cover pointed away from your body. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
WARNING: Do not set a live air bag module down with the trim cover face down. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
WARNING: After deployment, the air bag surface can contain deposits of sodium hydroxide, a product of the gas generant combustion that is irritating to the skin. Wash your hands with soap and water afterwards.
WARNING: Never probe the connectors on the air bag module. Doing so can result in air bag deployment, which can result in personal injury.
WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury, do not use any memory saver devices.
NOTE: The air bag warning lamp illuminates when the RCM fuse is removed and the ignition switch is ON. This is normal operation and does not indicate a supplemental restraint system (SRS) fault.
NOTE: The SRS must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.

    All vehicles 

  1. Turn all vehicle accessories OFF.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to OFF.
  3. Remove the RH kick panel cover and remove the restraints control module fuse F2.05 (10A) from the central junction box (CJB). For additional information, refer to the SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  4. Turn the ignition ON and visually monitor the air bag indicator for at least 30 seconds. The air bag indicator will remain lit continuously (no flashing) if the correct RCM fuse has been removed. If the air bag indicator does not remain lit continuously, remove the correct RCM fuse before proceeding.
  5. Turn the ignition OFF.
    6. WARNING: To avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury, the backup power supply must be depleted before repairing or replacing any front or side air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) components and before servicing, replacing, adjusting or striking components near the front or side air bag sensors, such as doors, instrument panel, console, door latches, strikers, seats and hood latches.
    The first row side impact sensors are located at or near the base of the B-pillars.
    The second row side impact sensors (if equipped) are located at or near the base of the C-pillars.
    To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least 1 minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies (if equipped).
  6. Disconnect the battery ground cable (14301) and wait at least 1 minute. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  7. Remove the 2 steering wheel plugs (1 shown).

  8. Remove the 2 driver air bag module bolts (1 shown).

  9. Disconnect and remove the driver air bag module.
    1. Squeeze the tabs and disconnect the driver air bag module electrical connector.
    2. Squeeze the tabs and disconnect the driver air bag module electrical connector.
    3. Remove the driver air bag module.

  10. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tools to the clockspring electrical connectors at the top of the steering column.

    11. Vehicles with side air curtains 

    NOTE: If the headliner has the word "AIRBAG" embossed on it near each B-pillar, the vehicle is equipped with side air curtain modules.
  11. Remove the A-pillar trim panel. For additional information, refer to INTERIOR TRIM AND ORNAMENTATION .
  12. Disconnect the driver side air curtain module electrical connector.

  13. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tool to the vehicle harness side of the driver side air curtain module electrical connector.

    14. All vehicles 

  14. Remove the glove compartment. For additional information, refer to INTERIOR TRIM AND ORNAMENTATION .
    15. NOTE: The inset view of the illustration is looking up into the instrument panel from underneath.
    NOTE: The passenger air bag module electrical connector is located in front of the cross-car beam attached by a pin-type retainer to a bracket on the back of the passenger air bag module.

  15. Locate the passenger air bag module electrical connector.
  16. Disconnect the passenger air bag module.
    1. Push the passenger air bag module electrical connector together.
    2. Push down, pivoting the electrical connector and release the electrical connector retainer.
    3. Pull out, disconnecting the vehicle harness end of the connector from the component end.

  17. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tool to the vehicle harness side of the passenger air bag module electrical connector.

    18. Vehicles with side air curtains 

    NOTE: If the headliner has the word "AIRBAG" embossed on it near each B-pillar, the vehicle is equipped with side air curtain modules.
  18. Remove the A-pillar trim panel. For additional information, refer to INTERIOR TRIM AND ORNAMENTATION .
  19. Disconnect the passenger side air curtain module electrical connector.

  20. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tool to the vehicle harness side of the passenger side air curtain module electrical connector.

    21. All vehicles 

  21. From under the passenger seat, release the tab and disconnect the passenger seat side air bag or passenger seat side thorax air bag electrical connector.

    22. Vehicles without side air curtains 

  22. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tool to the vehicle harness side of the passenger seat side air bag electrical connector.

    23. Vehicles with side air curtains

  23. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tool to the vehicle harness side of the passenger seat side thorax air bag electrical connector.

    24. All vehicles 

  24. From under the driver seat, release the tab and disconnect the driver seat side air bag or driver seat side thorax air bag electrical connector.

    25. Vehicles without side air curtains 

  25. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tool to the vehicle harness side of the driver seat side air bag electrical connector.

    26. Vehicles with side air curtains 

  26. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tool to the vehicle harness side of the driver seat side thorax air bag electrical connector.

    27. All vehicles 

  27. Install the RCM fuse F2.05 to the CJB.
  28. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
