Seat Backrest Cover - Front: Removal

WARNING: Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) vehicle and when handling an air bag module. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
WARNING: Never probe the connectors on the air bag module. Doing so can result in air bag deployment, which can result in personal injury.
WARNING: After deployment, the air bag surface can contain deposits of sodium hydroxide, a product of the gas generant combustion that is irritating to the skin. Wash your hands with soap and water afterwards.
WARNING: Carry a live air bag module with the air bag and trim cover pointed away from your body. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
WARNING: Do not set a live air bag module down with the trim cover face down. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
WARNING: Front seat back trim covers installed on seats equipped with side air bags cannot be repaired, they are to be replaced (cleaning is permissible).
WARNING: Side air bag modules with damaged covers must be replaced.
WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury, do not use any memory saver devices.
NOTE: If a side air bag deployment took place, the backrest foam pad, trim cover and side air bag module must be replaced. The backrest frame should be replaced if necessary.
NOTE: If a seat equipped with a supplemental restraint system (SRS) component is being serviced, the SRS must be depowered.
NOTE: The air bag warning lamp illuminates when the RCM fuse is removed and the ignition switch is ON. This is normal operation and does not indicate a supplemental restraint system (SRS) fault.
NOTE: The SRS must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.
NOTE: Driver seat shown, passenger seat similar.
NOTE: A seat side air bag module is shown, a seat side thorax air bag module is similar. For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM in the Description and Operation .
  1. Depower the SRS. For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING in the General Procedures .
    2. CAUTION: The backrest trim panel must be inspected for cracked or broken upper hooks and lower retainer bosses. Remove and discard the lower pin-type retainers before inspecting the lower trim panel bosses. If any hook or boss is damaged a new backrest trim panel must be installed. Always install new pin-type retainers when installing a backrest trim panel.
  2. Remove the seat backrest trim panel.
    1. Use an appropriate tool to release the 2 pin-type retainers at the lower bosses of the backrest trim panel.
    2. Push forward on the top of the backrest panel and slide it downward to release the upper hooks.
    3. Continue to push forward on the top of the backrest trim panel while rotating the bottom a few inches rearward to disengage the upper hook barbs.

  3. Remove the head restraint.
  4. Release the trim cover J-clip.

  5. If equipped, remove the pin-type retainer and the ventilation air - upper blower assembly.
  6. Detach all the backrest trim cover J-clips and the pin-type retainers.
    • Detach the electrical connector(s) near the bottom of the backrest.

  7. Partially remove the backrest trim cover to access the hog rings and remove and discard the hog rings.

  8. Remove the seat side air bag module nut cover.
    9. NOTE: If installing a new side air bag module, use new retaining nuts. If the same side air bag module is to be reused then reuse the side air bag module nuts.
  9. Remove the 2 seat side air bag module nuts from the backrest frame.
  10. With one hand on the seat side air bag module, position the backrest trim cover and foam pad forward enough to access the seat side air bag module.

  11. Remove the seat side air bag module from the deployment chute.
    1. Separate the seat side air bag module and deployment chute from the backrest frame mounting bracket.
    2. Pull the seat side air bag module mounting studs back through the deployment chute openings and remove the seat side air bag module from the deployment chute.

  12. Squeeze the tabs together, disconnect and remove the seat side air bag module.

  13. Pinch the end of the head restraint guide sleeves and remove.

  14. Remove the backrest trim cover.
