Test U: Low Washer Indicator Inoperative Or Always On

NOTE: After making any repairs, clear DTCs and perform self-test.
  1. Use Generic Electronic Module GEM DTCs recorded from self-tests. If no DTCs exist, go to next step. If B1454 exists, go to step  3. If B1456 exists, go to step  5.
  2. Disconnect GEM 16-pin harness connector C240. GEM is located on back side of central junction box, under left side of instrument panel. Connect fused jumper wire (5-amp) between ground and GEM 16-pin harness connector C240 terminal No. 14. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. See Fig 1. If low washer warning indicator does not illuminate, go to next step. If low washer fluid warning indicator illuminates, diagnose and repair wiper washer system as necessary. See WIPER/WASHER SYSTEMS - EXPEDITION & NAVIGATOR article.
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect GEM 16-pin harness connector C240. Disconnect instrument cluster 22-pin harness connector C237. Measure resistance in Pink/Yellow wire between GEM harness connector C240 terminal No. 14 and instrument cluster harness connector C237 terminal No. 7. See Figure and Fig 1 . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Pink/Yellow wire between instrument cluster and GEM.
  4. Measure resistance in Pink/Yellow wire between ground and GEM harness connector C240 terminal No. 14. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to step  6. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Pink/Yellow wire between instrument cluster and GEM.
  5. Disconnect GEM 16-pin harness connector C240. Disconnect instrument cluster 22-pin harness connector C237. Measure voltage between ground and GEM harness connector C240 terminal No. 14 (Pink/Yellow wire). See Fig 1. If any voltage exists, repair short to power in Pink/Yellow wire between instrument cluster and GEM. If voltage does not exist, go to step  7.
  6. Disconnect all instrument cluster harness connectors. Inspect harness connectors for corrosion and pushed out pins. Connect all instrument cluster harness connectors, ensuring they are connected correctly. Operate system and verify if concern is still present. If concern is still present, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If concern is not present, system is operating correctly at this time. Clear DTCs and perform self-test.
  7. Disconnect all GEM harness connectors. Inspect harness connectors for corrosion and pushed out pins. Connect all GEM harness connectors, ensuring they are connected correctly. Operate system and verify if concern is still present. If concern is still present, replace GEM. See GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE/CENTRAL TIMER MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If concern is not present, system is operating correctly at this time. Clear DTCs and perform self-test.
