Test M: Charging System Indicator Inoperative Or Always On

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Lincoln Navigator and 2002 Ford Expedition. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: After making any repairs, clear DTCs and perform self-test.
  1. Check charging system operation. If charging system is operating properly, go to next step. If charging system is not operating properly, diagnose and repair charging system. See appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS.
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If the charging system indicator illuminates, go to step  5. If charging system indicator does not illuminate, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect generator 3-pin harness connector. Connect fused jumper wire (5-amp) between ground and Light Green/Red wire at generator harness connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If charging system indicator does not illuminate, go to next step. If charging system indicator illuminates, replace generator. See appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS.
  4. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster 20-pin harness connector C238. Measure resistance in Light Green/Red wire between generator harness connector and instrument cluster harness connector C238 terminal No. 3. See Figure. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to step  7. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Light Green/Red wire between generator and instrument cluster.
  5. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect generator 3-pin harness connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If charging system indicator illuminates, go to next step. If charging system indicator does not illuminate, replace generator. See GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in ELECTRICAL.
  6. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance between ground and generator harness connector Light Green/Red wire. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Light Green/Red wire between generator and instrument cluster.
  7. Disconnect all instrument cluster harness connectors. Inspect harness connectors for corrosion and pushed out pins. Connect all instrument cluster harness connectors, ensuring they are connected correctly. Operate system and verify if concern is still present. If concern is still present, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If concern is not present, system is operating correctly at this time. Clear DTCs and perform self-test.
