Pinpoint Test K: The AUTOLAMPS Are Inoperative

- K1 CHECK THE HEADLAMPS OPERATION
- Place the headlamp switch in the headlamps ON position.
- Do the low beams illuminate?
- K2 CHECK THE HEADLAMP SWITCH OUTPUT
- Key in OFF position.
- Connect the diagnostic tool.
- Key in ON position.
- Monitor the instrument cluster headlamp switch status PID while rotating the knob to the autolamps ON position.
- Does the PID match with the headlamp switch position?
- K3 CHECK THE HEADLAMP SWITCH
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Headlamp Switch C205.
- Carry out the headlamp switch component test. Refer to COMPONENT TESTING for component testing.
- Is the headlamp switch OK?
- Yes : GO to K4.
- No : INSTALL a new headlamp switch. REFER to HEADLAMP SWITCH in this article. TEST the system for normal operation.
- K4 CHECK CIRCUIT 10-LE47 (GY/OG) FOR AN OPEN
- Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220c.
- Measure the resistance between instrument cluster C220c-18, circuit 10-LE47 (GY/OG), harness side and headlamp switch C205-4, circuit 10-LE47 (GY/OG), harness side.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
- Yes : GO to K5.
- No : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- K5 CHECK CIRCUIT 10-LE47 (GY/OG) FOR A SHORT TO POWER
- Measure the voltage between instrument cluster C220c-18, circuit 10-LE47 (GY/OG), harness side and ground.
- Is voltage present?
- Yes : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- No : GO to K11.
- K6 CHECK PHOTOCELL INPUT
- Monitor the instrument cluster photocell status PID while covering and then illuminating the photocell.
- Does the PID percentage change with the sensor covered and then illuminated?
- K7 CHECK THE PHOTOCELL
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Photocell C286.
- Key in ON position.
- Monitor the instrument cluster photocell status PID while connecting and then disconnecting a fused (5A) jumper wire between photocell C286-2, circuit 8-LE42 (WH/BU), harness side and photocell C286-5, circuit 31-LE42 (BK/OG), harness side.
- Does the PID percentage change with the jumper wire connected and then disconnected?
- Yes : INSTALL a new photocell. REFER to LIGHT SENSOR in this article. TEST the system for normal operation.
- No : GO to K8.
- K8 CHECK CIRCUIT 31-LE42 (BK/OG) FOR AN OPEN
- Key in OFF position.
- Measure the resistance between photocell C286-5, circuit 31-LE42 (BK/OG), harness side and ground.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
- Yes : GO to K9.
- No : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- K9 CHECK CIRCUIT 8-LE42 (WH/BU) FOR AN OPEN
- Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220a.
- Measure the resistance between instrument cluster C220a-19, circuit 8-LE42 (WH/BU), harness side and photocell C286-2, circuit 8-LE42 (WH/BU), harness side.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
- Yes : GO to K10.
- No : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- K10 CHECK CIRCUIT 8-LE42 (WH/BU) FOR A SHORT TO POWER
- Key in ON position.
- Measure the voltage between instrument cluster C220a-19, circuit 8-LE42 (WH/BU), harness side and ground.
- Is voltage present?
- Yes : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- No : GO to K11.
- K11 CHECK INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect all instrument cluster connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
- Yes : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . TEST the system for normal operation.
- No : The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. REPEAT the self-test.
