Exhaust Manifold - LH: Removal

- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
- Hold the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position using a suitable holding device.
- Remove the catalytic converters. For additional information, refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM .
- Loosen the intermediate shaft slider bolt.
- Remove and discard the intermediate shaft-to-steering gear bolt and disconnect the intermediate shaft from the steering gear.
- Remove the oil level indicator tube. For additional information, refer to OIL LEVEL INDICATOR AND TUBE in this article .
- Remove the screws and the lower LH splash shield.
- Remove the 4 bolts and the heat shield.
- Remove the 8 nuts and the exhaust manifold.
- Discard the nuts.
- Remove the heat shield stud bolt.
- Discard the exhaust manifold gasket.
- Remove the 8 exhaust manifold studs and discard.
- Clean and inspect the exhaust manifold. For additional information, refer to ENGINE SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
CAUTION:
Do not allow the steering wheel to rotate while the intermediate shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring can result. If there is evidence that the shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered. For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM
