Removal and Installation

NOTE: The trailer hitch is integral to the rear bumper.
  1. Remove the rear bumper cover. For additional information, refer to REAR BUMPER COVER - EXPLORER  or REAR BUMPER COVER - MOUNTAINEER .
  2. Remove the trailer hitch light plug bolt.
  3. Remove the trailer hitch light plug.
    • Release the pin-type wire harness retainers and cut the cable ties retaining the harness to the hitch.
  4. Lower and position aside the spare tire.
  5. Remove the 6 trailer hitch bolts.
    • To install, tighten to 180 Nm (133 lb-ft).
  6. Remove the trailer hitch.
  7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
