Pinpoint Test A: The Daytime Running Lamps Are Inoperative

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2005 Mercury Mountaineer and 2005 Ford Explorer. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. A1 CHECK DRL MODULE OUTPUT
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: DRL Relay.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Make sure the headlamps and autolamps are in the OFF position and the parking brake is not applied.
    • Measure the voltage between ground and DRL relay socket pin 4, circuit 13 (RD/BK).

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
    • Yes  : CARRY OUT the DRL relay component test. If the relay tests OK, REPAIR circuit 13 (RD/BK) between the DRL relay and the low beam headlamps for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
    • No  : GO to A2.
  2. A2 CHECK CIRCUIT 13 (RD/BK) FOR AN OPEN
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: DRL Module C1030.
    • Measure the resistance between DRL module C1030-1, circuit 13 (RD/BK) and DRL relay socket pin 4, circuit 13 (RD/BK).

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
    • Yes  : GO to A3.
    • No  : REPAIR circuit 13 (RD/BK) between the DRL relay and the DRL module for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
  3. A3 CHECK THE PARKING BRAKE SWITCH SIGNAL CIRCUIT TO THE DRL MODULE FOR SHORT TO GROUND
NOTE: Verify the parking brake control is fully released for this step.
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: DRL Module C1030.
    • Measure the resistance between DRL module C1030-6, circuit 162 (LG/RD), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
    • Yes  : GO to A4.
    • No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  4. A4 CHECK VOLTAGE TO THE DRL MODULE
    • Measure the voltage between DRL module C1030-2, circuit 434 (LB/BK), harness side and ground.

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
    • Yes  : GO to A5.
    • No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  5. A5 CHECK IGNITION SENSE INPUT
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between DRL module C1030-3, circuit 932 (GY/WH), harness side and ground.

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
    • Yes  : GO to A6.
    • No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  6. A6 CHECK THE DRL MODULE GROUND - CIRCUIT 1203 (BK/LB)
    • Measure the resistance between DRL module C1030-4, circuit 1203 (BK/LB), harness side and ground.
