Removal (Explorer)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Ford Ranger, 2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac, 2002 Ford Explorer Sport, and 2002 Ford Explorer. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: DO NOT remove the gearshift lever knob.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the screw and lift the console finish panel to access the gearshift lever nut. See Fig 1. Remove the gearshift lever nut. See Fig 2. Remove the upper gearshift lever and console finish panel as an assembly.
  2. Install the nut on the front of the lever, then tighten the nut to remove the eccentric stud out of the gearshift lever. With the vehicle in Neutral, raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Drain the transmission fluid as necessary. See SERVICING - M/T article in MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS.
  4. Remove the front support. See Fig 3. Remove the starter. See appropriate STARTERS article. Remove the rear drive shaft. Disconnect front drive shaft from transfer case, if so equipped, and position it aside. Remove the transfer case, if equipped. See appropriate REMOVAL & INSTALLATION article.
  5. Using a suitable high lift jack, support the transmission. See Fig 4. Securely strap the transmission to the jack. Remove the right side crossmember cover, then the 4 crossmember bolts. See Fig 5. Remove the 4 left side crossmember bolts.
  6. Disconnect the heat shields from the crossmember. See Fig 6 and Fig 7 . Remove the nuts, then lower the crossmember from the vehicle. See Fig 8. Disconnect the clutch hydraulic line from the clutch slave cylinder. See Fig 9.
  7. Remove the clip and pull the line rearward. Disconnect the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor harness connector. See Fig 10. Disconnect the reverse light switch harness connector. See Fig 11.
  8. Remove the wiring harness brackets from the transmission, then disconnect the Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) harness connectors. See Fig 12. Remove the 2 rear Three-Way Catalytic (TWC) converter bolts.
  9. Remove the front TWC bolts and the TWC. Remove the eight transmission-to-engine bolts. Remove the transmission. Move the transmission rearward until the input shaft is clear of the clutch, then lower from the vehicle.
