Removal & Installation: Transmission: Installation

  1. Using a suitable high lift jack, raise and position the transmission to the engine and clutch. Install the 8 transmission-to-engine bolts and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  2. Position the front TWC converter in the vehicle and install the bolts. DO NOT tighten the bolts at this time. Using a NEW gasket and nuts, install the 2 rear TWC converter bolts and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  3. Tighten the front TWC converter bolts to specification at this time. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Connect the HO2S harness connectors. Install the right side and left side crossmember bolts and the right side crossmember cover. See Figure.
  4. Tighten crossmember bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install the transmission mount nuts and tighten to specification. See Figure.
  5. Connect the heat shields to the crossmember. See Figure and Figure . Remove the high lift transmission jack. Install the wiring harness brackets and attach the wiring harness. See Figure.
  6. Position the wire harness on the transmission. Connect the OSS sensor harness connector. See Figure. Connect the reverse light switch harness connector. See Figure. Install the front support. See Figure.
  7. Connect the clutch hydraulic line to the clutch slave cylinder. See Figure. Install the starter. See appropriate STARTERS article. Install the transfer case, if equipped. See appropriate REMOVAL & INSTALLATION article. Install the rear drive shaft. Connect front drive shaft, if equipped.
  8. Fill the transmission to proper level with appropriate fluid. See SERVICING - M/T article in MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS. Lower the vehicle.
  9. Position the upper gearshift lever, the outer gearshift lever boot and console finish panel into the console, then install the nut. Connect the negative battery cable. Bleed the clutch hydraulic system. See BLEEDING .


  1. Using the transmission jack, raise and position the transmission to the engine and clutch. Install the 9 bolts retaining the transmission to the engine and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install the 6 bolts retaining the crossmember to the frame and tighten to specification. See Figure.
  2. Install the transmission insulator to crossmember nuts and tighten to specification. See Figure. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Remove the jack from the transmission. Connect the clutch hydraulic to the clutch slave cylinder.
  3. On models equipped with 4WD, install the transfer case. See appropriate REMOVAL & INSTALLATION article. On all models, install the exhaust hanger into the insulator. Install a NEW exhaust converter outlet gasket, then install the catalytic converter to the muffler bolts and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  4. Install the exhaust inlet crossover pipe bolts. Install the rear drive shaft and front drive shaft, if so equipped. Install the starter motor. See appropriate STARTERS article. Connect the harness connectors to the HO2S. Connect the harness connector to the reverse light switch. See Figure. Connect the VSS harness connector. See Figure.
  5. Connect the HO2S harness connector to the bracket. Connect the wiring harness to the bracket. Fill the transmission with proper fluid to appropriate level. See SERVICING - M/T article in MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS.
  6. Connect the negative battery cable. Install the upper gearshift lever and the outer gearshift lever boot and console as an assembly. See SHIFT LEVER & BOOT .
