Removal and Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2005 Mercury Mountaineer and 2005 Ford Explorer. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove the A-pillar and cowl side trim panels. For additional information, refer to INTERIOR TRIM AND ORNAMENTATION .
  2. Remove the front floor console. For additional information, refer to FLOOR CONSOLE - FRONT .
  3. Depower the supplemental restraint system (SRS). For additional information, refer to Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depower and Repower in SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .
  4. Remove the instrument panel side finish panels.
  5. Remove the 2 steering column opening cover screws.
  6. Remove the steering column opening cover.
  7. Remove the 3 lower steering column cover screws.
  8. Remove the lower steering column cover.
  9. Disconnect the steering column electrical connectors.
  10. Disconnect the RH side bulkhead electrical connector.
  11. Disconnect the RH side body harness electrical connector.
  12. Remove the 2 parking brake release handle screws.
  13. Disconnect the LH side instrument panel electrical connectors and bulkhead connector.
  14. CAUTION: To avoid damage to the clockspring, do not allow the steering column shaft to rotate while the intermediate shaft is disconnected.
  15. Remove the pinch bolt.
    • To install, tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).
  16. Disconnect the adjustable pedal electrical connector.
  17. Disconnect the brake light switch electrical connector.
  18. Remove the 2 LH instrument panel center brace bolts.
    • To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  19. Remove the 2 LH instrument panel center brace nuts.
    • To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  20. Remove the LH instrument panel center brace.
  21. Disconnect the transmission range selector lever cable.
  22. Disconnect the RH side bulkhead electrical connector.
  23. Disconnect the LH side body harness electrical connector.
  24. Remove the 3 ground strap bolts.
    • To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  25. Disconnect the inertia switch electrical connector.
  26. Disconnect the RH side instrument panel electrical connectors.
  27. Remove the 2 RH instrument panel center brace bolts.
    • To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  28. Disconnect the vacuum connector.
  29. Remove the 2 RH instrument panel center brace nuts.
    • To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  30. Remove the RH instrument panel center brace.
  31. Remove the front wiper pivot arms. For additional information refer to WIPERS AND WASHERS .
  32. Remove the cowl panel grille.
  33. Remove the instrument panel bolt located under the cowl panel grille.
    • To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).

  34. Remove the instrument panel defroster grille.
  35. CAUTION: To avoid damage to the sunload sensor and electrical connector, remove the grille just enough to disconnect the connector.
  36. Disconnect the sunload sensor electrical connector.
  37. Remove the 2 instrument panel top cowl bolts.
    • To install LH bolt, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
    • To install RH bolt, tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).
  38. Disconnect the antenna lead-in cable.
  39. Disconnect the RCM electrical connector.
  40. Disconnect the center ground strap bolt.
    • To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  41. CAUTION: To avoid damage to the instrument panel, an assistant is required to support the panel before carrying out this step.
    CAUTION: Before removing the instrument panel make sure all electrical connector wiring is free and not hindered.
  42. Remove the 4 instrument panel bolts.
    • To install, tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).
  43. Remove the instrument panel.
  44. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
