Removal and Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2005 Mercury Mountaineer and 2005 Ford Explorer. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. If equipped, remove the rear auxiliary A/C controls. For additional information, refer to AUXILIARY CLIMATE CONTROL .
  2. If equipped, remove the rear entertainment system. For additional information, refer to DIGITAL VERSATILE DISC (DVD) PLAYER .
  3. Remove the overhead console. For additional information, refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL AND CONSOLE .
  4. Remove the A-pillar trim panels. For additional information, refer to A-PILLAR TRIM PANEL .
  5. Detach and position the B-pillar trim panels aside.
    • Position the door opening weatherstrips aside.
  6. Detach and position the C-pillar trim panels aside.
    • Position the door opening weatherstrips aside.
  7. Remove the rear upper headliner trim panel.
    • Position the liftgate opening weatherstrip aside.

  8. Detach and position the D-pillar trim panels aside.
  9. If equipped, remove the gimp around the roof opening panel.
  10. Release the sun visor retainer cover tab.

  11. Slide a small flat-blade screwdriver under the cover to release the second retainer tab.

  12. Rotate the cover to remove.

  13. Remove the 4 sun visor retainer screws.
  14. Remove the sun visors.
  15. Carefully lower the headliner at the corner of the sun visor location to access the electrical connector and disconnect the electrical connector.
  16. Disconnect the roof opening panel electrical connector.
  17. If equipped, disconnect the interior mirror electrical connector and electronic compass sensor connector.
  18. Use a thin-bladed tool and carefully remove the dome lamp cover.
  19. Disconnect the dome lamp electrical connectors.
  20. Use a thin-bladed tool and carefully remove the cargo lamp cover.
  21. Disconnect the cargo lamp electrical connector.
  22. Remove the upper air duct.
    • Remove the pin-type retainers.
    • Push down on the duct, tilt the top outward and pull upward to remove.

  23. Remove the lower air duct.

  24. Disconnect the electrical connector located at the C-pillar.
    • Release the wiring harness pin-type retainers.

  25. Disconnect all of the electrical connectors.

  26. Remove the rear pin-type retainer.
  27. Disconnect the electrical connector and the wiring pin-type retainers on the A-pillar.

    28. CAUTION: To prevent bending or damaging the headliner, an assistant is required to support the headliner while carrying out the remaining steps.
  28. Open the sun visor center retainer cover and remove the screw.
  29. Remove the sun visor center retainer.
    30. CAUTION: To prevent damaging the garment hanger retainer, use a 3/16-inch flat-blade screwdriver to carry out this step.
    NOTE: The garment hanger is shown without the roof sheet metal to show the metal retainer clip. The metal retainer clip will remain engaged in the sheet metal after the garment hanger is removed.
  30. Remove the second and third row garment hangers.
    1. Open the access cover.
    2. Insert the flat-blade screwdriver fully into the garment hanger slot.
    3. Rotate the screwdriver 90 degrees so that the screwdriver spreads the metal retainer clip. Remove the plastic garment hanger.

  31. Remove the headliner.
  32. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
