Removal and Installation

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING AND LIFTING .
    2. CAUTION: Do not allow the steering column shaft to rotate while the lower shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring can result. If there is evidence that the shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered. For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .
  2. Place the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position and turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
    3. NOTE: A new bolt must be installed.
  3. Remove and discard the lower shaft-to-steering column shaft bolt.
    • To install, tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
    4. NOTE: A new bolt must be installed.
  4. Remove and discard the lower shaft-to-steering gear bolt.
    • To install, tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
  5. Remove the lower steering column shaft.
  6. Inspect the lower steering column shaft for boot damage or separation from the shaft tube.
    • If damage or separation of the lower steering column shaft is evident, install a new lower steering column shaft.
  7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
