Removal (All Models)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Ford Escape. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove battery hold down. Disconnect the positive and negative battery cables and remove battery. Remove battery tray bolts and battery tray. See Fig 1 . Remove the engine air cleaner housing bolt and Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor harness connector. See Fig 2 .
  2. Remove the engine air cleaner outlet tube. See Fig 3 . Disconnect the accelerator cable from the air cleaner outlet tube. Disconnect the emission management tube and hose. Disconnect the crankcase ventilation hose.
  3. Loosen the air cleaner outlet tube clamp. Disconnect the reverse light switch harness connector. Remove the front wire harness bracket nut and position aside the front wire harness. See Fig 4 . Remove the front wire harness bracket spacer.
  4. Disconnect the wire harness from the rear wire harness bracket. Remove the Park/Neutral Position (PNP) harness connector from the rear wire harness bracket and disconnect. See Fig 5 . Remove the rear wire harness bracket bolts. See Fig 6 .
  5. On vehicles with 4WD, disconnect the gearshift and selector cables. See Fig 7 . Remove the gearshift and selector cable end fittings from the gearshift lever by releasing the lock clips and lifting up. Disconnect the gearshift and selector cables from the brackets by pulling out tabs and lifting the cables up. Remove the bolt and position the ground strap aside. See Fig 8 .
  6. On all vehicles, disconnect the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) harness connector. See Fig 9 . Remove the clutch slave cylinder. See CLUTCH SLAVE CYLINDER  . Using the 3 Bar Engine Support Kit (303-F072), support the engine.
  7. Remove the left side transaxle support insulator bolts and remove the left side transaxle support insulator. See Fig 10 or Fig 11 . Remove the bolts and nuts from the left side transaxle support insulator bracket and remove the left side transaxle support insulator bracket. See Fig 12 or Fig 13 .
  8. Remove the rear transaxle support insulator bolt. See Fig 14 . Remove the front transaxle support insulator bolts and remove the front transaxle support insulator and bracket. See Fig 15 .
  9. Remove the 3 starter motor bolts and position the starter motor aside. See Fig 16 . Remove the top and front transaxle flywheel housing bolts. On vehicles with 2WD, remove the left side axle shaft. See FWD AXLE SHAFTS - ESCAPE article.
  10. On vehicles with 4WD, remove the left and right front axle shafts, intermediate shaft bearing and intermediate shaft assembly. See FWD AXLE SHAFTS - ESCAPE article. Drain the transaxle fluid. After draining fluid, install the transaxle drain plug and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  11. On all vehicles, remove the rear transaxle support insulator bracket bolts. See Fig 17 . On vehicles with 2WD, remove the rear transaxle support insulator bracket. Disconnect the shifter linkage and stabilizer bar bolt. See Fig 18 . Remove the shifter linkage bolt and nut and position the shifter linkage aside.
    12. WARNING: The normal operating temperature of the exhaust system is very high. Never attempt to remove any part of the system until it has cooled. Be especially careful when working around the catalytic converters. The temperature of the converter rises to a high level after only a few minutes of engine operation. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
    NOTE: DO NOT reuse the bolts and straps for the pinion yoke. Install NEW bolts and straps.
  12. On vehicles with 4WD, remove the ground strap bolt. See Fig 19 . Index mark the pinion and yoke to the rear of the driveshaft. Remove and discard the bolts and straps. See Fig 20 .
    13. NOTE: DO NOT reuse the CV joint bolts and washers or center bearing nuts. Install NEW bolts and washers only or damage to the vehicle may occur.
  13. Remove and discard the 6 front driveshaft-to-Power Take Off (PTO) bolts and washers. See Fig 21 . Remove and discard the center bearing nuts. See Fig 22 . With the help of an assistant, remove the driveshaft.
  14. On all vehicles, remove the transverse crossmember bolts. See Fig 23 . Remove the transverse crossmember. Remove the splash shield screw and remove splash shield. Remove the aft-to-front crossmember bolts and the nuts. See Fig 24 .
  15. Remove the left side splash shield screws, pin-type retainer and remove splash shield. Remove the left under-side splash shield screws and remove splash shield. Support the transaxle with a transmission jack. Remove the remaining transaxle flywheel housing bolts.
  16. On vehicles with 2WD, separate the right side axle shaft from the transaxle before lowering transaxle. See FWD AXLE SHAFTS - ESCAPE article. Remove the transaxle.
