Installation (2WD)

- Apply a thin coating of Premium Long Life Grease (XG-1-C or K) or equivalent to the spline of the input shaft. Secure the transaxle on a transmission jack. Raise the transaxle to the correct height and position the transaxle to the engine. Install the lower transaxle flywheel housing bolts and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Remove the transmission jack. Position the left under-side splash shield and install the screws. Install the left side splash shield screws and the pin-type retainer. Position the aft-to-front crossmember and install the bolts and the nuts. See Figure .
- Tighten the aft-to-front crossmember bolts and nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install the under-side splash shield and screws. Position the transverse crossmember and install the bolts. See Figure . Tighten the transverse crossmember bolts to specification.
- Connect the shifter linkage and stabilizer bar. See Figure . Position the shifter linkage and install the bolt and nut. Tighten the shifter linkage bolt and nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Position the stabilizer bar and install the bolt.
- Install the left axle shaft. See FWD AXLE SHAFTS - ESCAPE article. Install the front and top transaxle flywheel housing bolts. Tighten transaxle flywheel housing bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Position the starter motor and install starter bolts. See Figure . Tighten starter bolts to specification.
- Install the rear transaxle support insulator bracket. See Figure . Position the rear transaxle support insulator bracket and install the bolts. Tighten rear transaxle support insulator bracket bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Position the front transaxle support insulator and install the transaxle support insulator bracket bolts. See Figure . Install the rear transaxle support insulator bolt and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Position the left transaxle support bracket and install the nuts and the bolt.
- Position the left transaxle support insulator and install the bolts. See Figure . Install the left transaxle support insulator to bracket bolt. Remove the 3 bar engine support kit. Position the clutch slave cylinder and install the bolts. See CLUTCH SLAVE CYLINDER .
- Connect the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) harness connector. See Figure . Position the rear wire harness bracket. Install the rear wire harness bracket bolts and wiring harness. Tighten rear wire harness bracket bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Connect the Park Neutral Position (PNP) switch harness connector. See Figure . Attach the PNP switch harness connector to the rear wire harness bracket. Install the front wire harness bracket and spacer. Install the front wire harness bracket nut and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Connect the reverse light switch harness connector.
- Position the air cleaner housing. See Figure . Install the air cleaner housing bolt. Connect the MAF sensor harness connector. Position and install the air cleaner outlet tube. See Figure . Tighten the air cleaner outlet tube clamp.
- Connect the crankcase ventilation hose. Attach the emission management tube and hose. Attach the accelerator cable to the air cleaner outlet tube. Install the 4 battery tray bolts. See Figure . Tighten the battery tray bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install battery and cables. Connect the pin-type wire clips at the front and the side of the battery tray. Fill the transaxle to proper level with appropriate fluid. See SERVICING - M/T article in MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS.
NOTE:
Make sure to align the right side axle shaft with the transaxle.
