Clutch Assembly: Inspection

  1. Inspect the pressure plate surface for burn marks, scores, flatness or ridges. Inspect the pressure plate diaphragm fingers for wear. See Fig 1 and Fig 2 . Install a NEW pressure plate as necessary.
  2. Using a slide rule, measure the depth to the rivet heads. See Fig 3 . Install a NEW clutch disc if any rivet head measurement is not within specifications. If the clutch disc is saturated with oil, inspect the crankshaft rear oil seal for leakage. If leakage is found, install a NEW seal prior to clutch disc installation. See appropriate ENGINES article.
  3. Use an emery cloth to remove minor imperfections in the clutch disc lining surface. Install a NEW clutch disc if any of the following conditions are present:
    • Oil or grease saturation.
    • Worn or loose facings.
    • Warpage or loose rivets at the hub.
    • Loose or broken torsion dampening springs.
    • Wear or rust on splines.
  4. Using the Dial Indicator with Magnetic Base (100-D002, D78P-4201-B), check clutch disc runout. See Fig 4 . Install a NEW clutch disc if not within specifications. Install a NEW clutch release fork if any of the following conditions are present:
    • Cracks.
    • Distortion.
    • Excessive wear on the release bearing contact surface.
