Engine Front Cover: Removal

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  2. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING .
  3. Remove the crankshaft front seal. For additional information, refer to CRANKSHAFT FRONT SEAL .
  4. Remove the valve covers. For additional information, refer to VALVE COVER - LH  and VALVE COVER - RH .
  5. Remove the drain plug and drain the engine oil. Install the drain plug when finished.
    • Tighten to 14 Nm (10 lb-ft).

    6. CAUTION: While servicing the power steering system, make sure to plug all open hoses, line fittings and fluid ports to prevent the entry of contaminants or premature failure of power steering components can result.

  6. Remove the power steering reservoir bolts.
  7. Loosen the clamps, disconnect the hoses and remove the reservoir.
    • Drain the fluid into a suitable container.

  8. Using the special tool, remove the power steering pump pulley.

  9. Remove the nuts and position the wiring bracket out of the way.

  10. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose from the power steering pump.
    • Remove and discard the O-ring seal.
  11. Remove the nuts and detach the brackets.

  12. Remove the 3 bolts and the power steering pump.
  13. Remove the nut and the upper radiator hose bracket and position the radio interference capacitor aside.

  14. Remove the nut and the power steering fluid reservoir bracket and position the radio interference capacitor aside.

  15. Disconnect the camshaft position sensor (CMP) electrical connector.
  16. Remove the bolt and the CMP sensor.
  17. Remove the bolt and the LH upper idler pulley.
  18. Remove the bolt and the LH lower idler pulley.
  19. Remove the 4 bolts and the coolant pump pulley.
  20. Remove the bolt and the RH idler pulley.
  21. Remove the 3 bolts and the drive belt tensioner.
  22. Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.
  23. Loosen the bolts and lower the A/C compressor approximately 25 mm (1 in).
  24. Remove the bolt and the CKP sensor.
  25. Remove the 4 oil pan-to-front cover bolts.
  26. Remove the transmission cooler tube bracket from the stud.

  27. Remove the engine front cover fasteners in the sequence shown in Fig 10.

  28. Remove the front cover and the gaskets. Discard the gaskets.
