Engine Front Cover: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2005 Mercury Mountaineer and 2005 Ford Explorer. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
    CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old sealant.
  1. Clean and inspect the front cover mating surfaces with silicone gasket remover, metal surface prep and a plastic scraping tool. Follow the directions on the packaging.
    2. NOTE: If the engine front cover is not secured within 4 minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned with silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging. Failure to follow this procedure can result in future oil leakage.

  2. Apply silicone gasket and sealant in the locations shown in Fig 1.
  3. Install the engine front cover and the bolts. Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown in Fig 2 to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).

  4. Tighten the 4 oil pan bolts in the sequence shown:
    • Stage 1: Tighten to 2 Nm (18 lb-in).
    • Stage 2: Tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
    • Stage 3: Tighten an additional 60 degrees.

  5. Position the transmission cooler tube bracket and install the nut.
    • Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).

  6. Position the CKP sensor and install the bolt.
    • Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-ft).
  7. Connect the CKP sensor electrical connector.
  8. Tighten the A/C compressor bolts to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  9. Position the drive belt tensioner and install the 3 bolts.
    • Tightens to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  10. Position the RH idler pulley and install the bolt.
    • Tightens to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  11. Position the coolant pump pulley and install the 4 bolts.
    • Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  12. Position the LH lower idler pulley and install the bolt.
    • Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  13. Position the LH upper idler pulley and install the bolt.
    • Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  14. Position the CMP sensor and install the bolt.
    • Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  15. Connect the CMP sensor electrical connector.
  16. Position the power steering fluid reservoir bracket and the radio interference capacitor and install the nut.
    • Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).

  17. Position the radio interference bracket and the upper radiator hose bracket and install the nut.
    • Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).

  18. Position the power steering pump and install the 3 bolts.
    • Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  19. Position the brackets and install the nuts.
    • Tighten to 11 Nm (8 lb-ft).

  20. Using the appropriate special tool, install a new O-ring seal on the power steering pressure hose fitting.

  21. Connect the power steering pressure hose to the power steering pump.
    • Tighten to 65 Nm (48 lb-ft).
  22. Using the special tool, install the power steering pump pulley.

  23. Connect the hoses to the power steering fluid reservoir and position the clamps.

  24. Position the power steering fluid reservoir and install the bolts.
    • Tighten to 7 Nm (62 lb-in).

  25. Install the valve covers. For additional information, refer to VALVE COVER - LH  and VALVE COVER - RH .
  26. Install the crankshaft front seal. For additional information, refer to CRANKSHAFT FRONT SEAL .
  27. Fill the engine with clean engine oil.
  28. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  29. Fill and bleed the engine cooling system. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING .
