Camshaft Roller Follower: Removal

  1. Remove the valve covers. For additional information, refer to VALVE COVER - LH  and VALVE COVER - RH .
  2. Remove the cooling fan. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING .
  3. Disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the bolts and ignition coils.
    • Tilt the coils away from the fuel rail to remove.

  4. NOTE: Remove any foreign material from the spark plug wells with compressed air before removing the spark plugs.
  5. Remove the spark plugs.
  6. Rotate the crankshaft until the cam lobe is directly away from the roller follower.

  7. Install the special tool.

  8. NOTE: The 3 rearmost followers on the RH side must use special tool 303-581 in the same manner as is shown in Fig 4.
    NOTE: The roller followers are positional. Mark the roller followers for installation in their original locations.

  9. Using the special tool, compress the valve springs and remove the camshaft roller followers.
