Plunging & Fixed CV Joint: Disassembly

  1. Remove the axle shaft. See AXLE SHAFTS  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Secure the axle shaft and CV joint in a vise using protective jaw covers. Remove the inboard axle shaft boot clamps.
  2. Slide the inboard axle shaft boot off the inboard CV joint housing. Separate the tripod joint from the inboard CV joint housing. If reinstalling the original tripod joint, mark the tripod joint and the axle shaft to make sure of correct installation. See Fig 1 .
  3. Remove the outer snap ring. See Fig 2 . Remove the tripod joint. Remove the inner snap ring. See Fig 3 . Remove the inboard axle shaft boot from the axle shaft. Remove the 2 outboard axle shaft boot clamps.
  4. Slide the outboard axle shaft CV joint boot back out of the way, exposing the outboard CV joint. If reinstalling the original outboard CV joint, mark the outboard CV joint and axle shaft to ensure correct installation.
  5. Use a soft-face hammer to separate the outboard CV joint by gently tapping it off the axle shaft. Remove the axle shaft bearing retainer circlip and discard. Slide the outboard axle shaft boot off of the axle shaft.
