Pinpoint Test D: One Or More Module-Controlled Illumination Source(s) Is Inoperative: Testing

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2005 Mercury Montego, 2005 Ford Freestyle, and 2005 Ford Five Hundred. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. D1 CHECK FOR RECORDED SMART JUNCTION BOX (SJB) DTCs
    • Reveiw the recorded results from the SJB continuous and on-demand self-tests.
    • Are any DTCs recorded?
  2. D2 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE SINGLE ILLUMINATION SOURCE
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Inoperative Illumination Source.
    • Place the headlamp switch to the parking lamps ON position.
    • Rotate the instrument panel dimmer switch to the full illumination position.
    • Measure the voltage between the inoperative illumination source, harness side and ground as follows:
      DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE

      Suspect Component Connector-Pin Circuit
Adjustable Pedals Switch (vehicles built before 1/2005) C2089-5 1417 (LG/RD)
Adjustable Pedals Switch (vehicles built after 1/2005) C2089-2 1417 (LG/RD)
Decklid Release Switch (vehicles built before 1/2005) C2269-5 1417 (LG/RD)
Decklid Release Switch (vehicles built after 1/2005) C2269-2 1417 (LG/RD)
      Center Stack C2114-7 1417 (LG/RD)
      Manual Climate Control Assembly C294a-2 1417 (LG/RD)
      Analog Clock C2016-2 1418 (LB/WH)
      Shifter Assembly C3245-2 1418 (LB/WH)
      Headlamp Switch C205-2 1418 (LB/WH)
    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
    • Yes  : GO to D3.
    • No  : REPAIR the circuit in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
  3. D3 CHECK CIRCUIT 1205 (BK) FOR AN OPEN
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Measure the resistance between the inoperative illumination source, harness side and ground as follows:
      DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE

      Suspect Component Connector-Pin Circuit
Adjustable Pedals Switch (vehicles built before 1/2005) C2089-4 1205 (BK)
Adjustable Pedals Switch (vehicles built after 1/2005) C2089-1 1205 (BK)
Decklid Release Switch (vehicles built before 1/2005) C2269-4 1205 (BK)
Decklid Release Switch (vehicles built after 1/2005) C2269-1 1205 (BK)
      Center Stack C2114-4 1205 (BK)
Manual Climate Control Assembly C294b-1 1205 (BK)

      Headlamp Switch C205-1 1205 (BK)
      Analog Clock C2016-3 1205 (BK)
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
    • Yes  : INSTALL a new component in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
    • No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  4. D4 CHECK CIRCUIT 1418 (LB/WH) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Headlamp Switch C205.
    • Disconnect: Shifter Assembly C3245.
    • Disconnect: SJB C2280d.
    • Measure the resistance between the SJB C2280d-20, circuit 1418 (LB/WH), harness side and ground.

    • Disconnect all the SJB connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all the SJB connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present?
    • Yes  : INSTALL a new SJB. REFER to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES . TEST the system for normal operation.
    • No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
