Instrument Panel: Removal

- Turn steering wheel to straight-ahead position and turn ignition switch to off position. Disconnect negative battery cable then positive battery cable and wait at least one minute to allow for depletion of restraint system backup power supply. Disable air bag system. See FORD - AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS. Remove clockspring. Remove bolt and disconnect ignition switch electrical connector. See Fig 1. Disconnect other electrical connectors at steering column. See Fig 2.
- On vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, remove bolt, indicator cable and transmission range indicator (PRND21) from steering column. See Fig 3. Disconnect shift cable from steering column shift tube lever. Disconnect shift cable from steering column bracket. Disconnect shift cable from steering column. See Fig 4.
- On all vehicles, disconnect brake shift interlock solenoid electrical connector. See Fig 5. Remove pinch bolt and remove intermediate shaft from steering column. Discard bolt. See Fig 6. Remove steering column lower nuts. See Fig 7. Remove nuts and steering column. See Fig 8.
- Remove 2 screws and position parking brake release handle aside. See Fig 9. Disconnect brake pedal position switch connector. See Fig 10.
- If equipped, disconnect clutch pedal position switch electrical connector. See Fig 11. Remove 8 screws and remove left and right door sill scuff plates. See Fig 12. Remove left and right side outer kick panels (retained with push-pins). See Fig 13. Remove left and right windshield side garnish moldings. See Fig 14.
- Remove instrument panel fuse block door located at left end for instrument panel. See Fig 15. Disconnect power distribution box from engine compartment bracket and position aside. See Fig 16. Remove bolts and disconnect bulkhead wiring harness from inside engine compartment. See Fig 17. Remove bulkhead connector insulator. See Fig 18. Unclip bulkhead electrical connectors from dash panel. See Fig 19.
- Release locking tab, and disconnect restraint control module electrical connector. See Fig 20. Remove passenger-side air bag module. See FORD - AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS. Disconnect blend door actuator connector. See Fig 21. Disconnect heater control panel vacuum harness connector. See Fig 22. Disconnect radio antenna cable in-line connector. See Fig 23. Press retaining tabs while raising glove box. See Fig 24. Remove glove box.
- Disconnect electrical connectors and ground wires on right side kick panel. See Fig 25. Remove defrost opening grille. See Fig 26. Remove 5 instrument panel-to-cowl top bolts. See Fig 27. Remove instrument panel brace bolt at steering column opening. See Fig 28. Remove one right instrument panel cowl side bolt and 2 left instrument panel cowl side bolts. See Fig 29 and Fig 30 .
- Position instrument panel away from cowl. Remove instrument panel-to-body wiring harness bolt and disconnect harness. See Fig 31. With an assistant, remove instrument panel. If necessary, transfer components to new instrument panel.
