Removal & Installation: CLOCKSPRING: Removal

  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS  . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM  . Place front wheels in straight-ahead position. Remove steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL  .
  2. Apply 2 strips of tape across clockspring to prevent accidental rotation of clockspring rotor. See Figure . Twist and remove tilt wheel handle and shank. Remove lower steering column shroud retaining screws and shroud. Place ignition switch in RUN position. Using suitable tool, push inward on lock cylinder release tab while pulling lock cylinder outward. See Figure .
  3. Remove upper steering column shroud. Remove Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) transmitter retaining screw and transmitter. Release key-in-ignition switch warning indicator switch tab and remove switch. Disengage clockspring wiring harness from harness retainers.
  4. Release clockspring electrical connector pin-type retainers. Disconnect remaining electrical connector, adjacent to clockspring electrical connector. Release clockspring retaining clips and remove clockspring. See Figure .
