Possible Causes

A right side crash sensor mounting failure could be caused by right side crash sensor internal fault, right side crash sensor mounting failure or an RCM internal fault.

  1. Check for hard or intermittent DTC

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). See USING SCAN TOOL  under DIAGNOSTICS. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Retrieve and record any continuous DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS)  under DIAGNOSTICS. Perform on-demand self-test. See ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST  under DIAGNOSTICS. If DTC B2440 was retrieved during on-demand self-test, fault is hard. Go to next step. If DTC B2440 was not retrieved, fault is intermittent. Go to step  5 .
  2. Check side crash sensor mounting

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Remove right side crash sensor. See SIDE CRASH SENSOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Visually inspect side crash sensor, mounting bracket and mounting surface for damage, corrosion or dirt. If significant corrosion or dirt is found, mounting bracket is not attached to mounting surface correctly or mounting bolts are not fully seated, repair or replace as necessary. Reinstall crash sensor and tighten mounting bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Go to step  6 . If side crash sensor, mounting bracket and mounting surface are free of damage, corrosion and dirt, go to next step.
  3. Check harness connection

    Visually check right side crash sensor harness connection. If right side crash sensor harness connector is properly connected to sensor, go to next step. If side crash sensor harness connector is not properly connected to sensor, reconnect connector. Go to step  6 .
  4. Check chassis ground

    Measure resistance between known-good chassis ground and right crash sensor mounting surface. If resistance is less than 100 ohms, replace RCM. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to step  6 . If resistance is more than 100 ohms, repair high resistance to ground at right side crash sensor mounting. Go to step  6 .
  5. Check for intermittent fault

    Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. If DTC retrieved in step  1 was an intermittent fault, check for cause of intermittent mounting fault. Attempt to recreate fault by flexing wire harness and cycling ignition switch frequently. Repair any intermittent problems found. Go to next step. If DTC retrieved in step  1 was not an intermittent fault, go to next step.
  6. Check for additional DTCs

    Refer to continuous DTCs recorded in step  1 . If any continuous DTCs were retrieved, go to diagnostic trouble code identification table for direction to appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) IDENTIFICATION  table. DO NOT clear any DTCs until all DTCs have been resolved. If no DTCs were retrieved, reconnect air bag system. Activate air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Clear all DTCs. See CLEARING FAULT CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS.
